I'll definitely be picking this up at the Fans of Film Music Gathering next week. I don't have the first edition so I'm looking forward to getting this and meeting the author, Randall Larson.

This book and the one on rejected scores all sound very interesting, but my budget is tight at the moment. Are there any excerpts of the book to preview?

The musique fantastique web site should launch this week, and it will include excerpts from each chapter of the book(s). Will post details when it's live.

Thanks for your kind comments on the 1st edition and my Hammer book! Here is a short outline of the contents of all four books, this will go up on the official web site (along with lots more details) in another week or so:

Because of its length, Musique Fantastique, 2nd Edition, is being published in four volumes. All four are intended to comprise a single book covering the topic in comprehensive detail.

Book One covers the silent era through the 1950s, including three chapters that detail the work of single composers whose primary output lay within these decades, the music of Toho and other studios in Japan during the ‘50s and ’60s, and the first of two examinations of music for television.

Book Two takes a look at the 1960s, the career of Bernard Herrmann as it pertained to science fiction, fantasy, and horror films, the distinctive approaches of film music in England, Latin America, Italy, and the rest of Europe, and music in animated fantasy and sf.

Book Three covers the 1970s and 1980s, the rise of electronic music in genre cinema, the contribution of Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, fantasy and horror music in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand since the 1970s, and the conclusion of our look at music for television since 1990.

Book Four examines the huge explosion of fantastic films and film music from the 1990s on. I cover in detail the veteran composers whose work still saturates genre cinema in the new millennium as well as those film scorers who have come into prominence during the first decade of the 21st Century. I take a look at how music for fantastic cinema has evolved in these last twenty years, and where film music for these genres may soar into the future.

For a more detailed contents list of each volume, see:

thanks! - rdl

Randall is a wonderful writer, and I'm looking forward to owning and devouring all four exciting volumes. They shall occupy a proud place on my book shelves, as does the original volume.

I was lucky enough to see a pre-release version of the book, and it's simply stunning in its scope. I will always love the first edition, as I have probably read and reread it more than any other music book in my collection through the years, but the new version covers so much more that I'm sadly resigning myself to the fact that I won't be going to that wonderful black-spined book for too much longer... My one complaint is that after using French in the title of the first edition, I was a little disappointed that you didn't choose a Slovakian or Polish translation of "Fantastic Music' in this one.

I think he should have gon with the Icelandic translation. Who wouldn't want to own a book called Frábær Tónlist? wink
