This is a comments thread about FSM CD: King Kong

It is, nonetheless, the iconic imagery that has stuck. The level of detail underlines alot of mileage was expected of it. I think it has succeeded, one way or the other.

The score has a great sense of continuity and completion. Things start to kick off with the percussive Sarifice - Hail To the King. I've heard that so many times I don't really need the vinyl or CD to bombard the neurones with sonic stimulus. It's burned in my head. Can't you hear that chanting, "Kong, Kong, Kong . . ." Then we get the progression to the climax. I love the way the thematic stuff cycles itself about three times before the siren reaches it's zenith and we come face to face with the thing behind the wall.

My favorite John Barry score from start to finish. I am still praying for the day this is expanded and I can toss my unmentionable expanded copy.

The famous 1976 poster is examined in detail here

http://www.kongisking.net/kongfiles/102505.html

and in Part 2 here

http://www.kongisking.net/kongfiles/12706.html

It's an informative look at how commercial art was made in those days.

I love it. Have to admit, its probably the one thing I miss most about lp. Sometimes you get fun stuff like that. I still have my poster that I got out of my lp of The Deep. Add to that the fact that the vinyl is blue.

I've never seen a more faithful CD representation of an original LP presentation than this. All the original artwork is there in the case. For instance, the actual record sleeve has a picture of Jessica Lange in Kong's hand and this image is embossed on the CD itself in a one to one positional and representational transfer. Such a nice touch. Great to hear that sound again. Boy oh boy does it bring back memories. All the sound effects from the album are included (I was half-expecting them to be gone). Everything clicks. It's a gemstone with which to remember John Barry. Nice touch, Stephen. Well done to all.

Here are most of the alternate Berkey posters, including the rarely seen downward viewpoint of Kong climbing up the towers, notable as being the only version that doesn't use the same "Kong head".

Yowza!

I was going to mention how much I liked the FSM release of the LP but now that Paramount has been cracked hopefully we could get a more complete (and somewhat better-sounding) presentation of this mighty but haunting score.

That said, the "Vertigo" poster blew me away. How awesome would it be to have the complete score from King Kong with this cover:

That's what I was talking about. In most of the production paintings, Kong has the same head, either flipped right or left. Thanks for posting.

What a great album - terrific themes, doesn't overstay its welcome, classic stuff -
when I'm depressed trying to wade through 78min. endless current scores that
have around 10mins. of good stuff buried within, albums like this are an island to
run to and de-stress about the state of film music with. Oh, and since he posts here,
great job on the notes Stephen, you should keep on with it! smile

I have this poster hanging on my wall, next to my bed.

I really hope a complete King Kong 76 is one of the surprises FSM has in store for their final releases.

Thanks!

I keep trying!

When Mike's Murder came out I emailed Luc Van De Ven and said, "You should have mailed me!" He said, "We tried but we'd lost your email address!" (It *had* been about ten years since I'd last written for him.)

LOL!!!

This is a great CD though, isn't it. I remember when I very first heard the LP. Strangely, I was actually a little bit disappointed. I didn't get it on that first listen. But as I listened again and the themes started to unfold like a flower, I *really* started to get it. Then seeing the film totally cemented it.

Cheers

A top FSM release, a really enjoyable listen. I had the gatefold LP, then the horrible sounding CD on the Mask label (like most people, I didn't know it was a boot), & then the great sounding FSM release. I'd buy the compleat score in a heartbeat (I think it's owned/controlled by Studio Canal now), but if it never appears I'm not that bothered, I'm very happy with the FSM CD.

I have the original LP from years ago, complete with the John Berkey poster print of Kong bursting through the barrier gates.

If you noticed on ALL the production paintings, Kong's head was IDENTICAL with the same expression, same jaw open, only flipped in some instances. The artists must have been pushed for time.

Who knows, there is always a time element involved with any commercial art. There is also a sense of the aesthetic.

Look at that Jet in Kong's hand, I would put money on it that the artist got his inspiration from an Angel Interceptor from CAPTAIN SCARLET, many artists use props and he may well have used the old Airfix kit here and tweaked it a bit, there is no existing/existed jet fighters that ever looked like that one in Kong's hand.

Funny enough, they didn't exist in the film either wink

This repetition of heads is not an artist's shortcut (most illustrators would dig the challenge) but more likely a clumsy attempt at "branding" the new Kong by using the same likeness. It's a way to keep the character "on model" for maximum recognition by the public. And good ol' Dino had a lot at stake with his "Konk" (as he so charmingly called Kong...)

From LK's blog about FSM stock numbers:

'This was intended to be an unlimited edition but for reasons I don't want to go into, the 359 remaining are all that’s left—it will not be repressed'.
