It was also on Johnny Gregory's "Spies And Dolls" album, in which he was credited as Chaquito, though hardly faithful to the original theme.

Bob DiMucci did already mention this version in an earlier post on the thread.

While it might not be 100% faithful to the original (what re-recordings are?), Gregory's version is excellent and entirely within the spirit of the original. As indeed are most of his tv themes. I would suspect that if Grusin himself ever heard the John Gregory arrangements of The Name of The Game and It Takes A Thief, he'd be very pleased.

Except for that saxophone solo, which I feel is out of place.

It Takes a Thief - second season intro (Dave Grusin)

I have mentioned several times on various threads on this board, that I think Grusin's It Takes A Thief, and The Name of the Game are both in need of CD releases, along with Jerry Fielding's music for McMillan and Wife, Dominic Frontiere's music for Probe (Search Control if like me you watched it in the UK), and Oliver Nelson's music for Longstreet too. The lack of response made me think it was obviously just me, and then in the space of a few days there's a Columbo music thread, and now one for Grusin.

Once again, might it be a good idea for a two or three CD set, with the original recordings of these themes and scores (no re-recordings please), with one set representing Universal, another set for Warner Bros, etc?

A Universal Mystery Movie set with Columbo, McMillan & Wife, Cool Million, Banacek etc, a Warner Bros set with Kung Fu, Search Control/Probe etc. Frontiere's The Invaders and Rat Patrol are still awaiting a release of some sort too, as is Pete Rugelo's Run For Your Life, so there are many themes/scores to consider.

Even Leonard Rosenman managed to write a fun theme for the old Primus TV show, anyone remember that?

How about Mancini's Remington Steele, or The Invisible Man?

I'm trying to remember where there is a saxophone solo in Gregory's version of The Name of The Game (haven't got the CD to hand at the moment). There surely are parts for sax in the music - it is a big band after all - but I seem to recall the main solo in that particular cue is by the percussionists isn't it?

I have no relation to THE NAME OF THE GAME, neither film nor series, but I'm very curious about the episode(s) that Spielberg did, especially the sci fi one called "LA 2017". I haven't been able to find it, however.

Oh yes! I remember this episode well! It sort of pre-empted the "first-wave" of environmental awareness and the effects of pollution which happened in the late sixties.

The fact that the episode showed that folks had gone to live underground kind of reminded me of the second "Apes" film.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. Probe/Search Control, McMillan and Wife, and Longstreet are my absolute favourites, but all of this material is just as deserving of a CD release as The Man From Uncle, The Fugative, Dr. Kildare etc. Obviously it all boils down to existance/condition of the recordings, clearance, and then yargetting the market properly, so studio themed sets seemed to me to be the best way to go. Like Network's releases, most of the music would be in mono, so hopefully that would mean alot could be crammed onto each CD.

Cheers,

Mike

They absolutely deserve to be released! Regarding the mono source material...there is software out there these days that can create an artificial form of stereo that is really very good. With a good "scrub up" many of these tracks would sound great! Oh...and you forgot another really good tv theme..."Ben Casey". smile

Has the soundtrack for the main title and cues for "The Name of the Game" ever been released?

No soundtrack, but at the time of the show's original network run (circa 1969)
Grusin released the main title theme on a 45rpm single.
The flip side was Grusin's theme for IT TAKES A THIEF. If I'm not mistaken,
I think this was released by Decca (?). OOP now for 40 years and very
hard to find.

Thanks quiller...I thought as much. I really enjoyed "Name" as a kid...great soundtrack. There was a similar style of theme for a show called "Search" which I thought was excellent at the time. OOPS! I'm showing my age!!! smile

I LOVE SEARCH!!! One of my favorite tv shows from my childhood,
which has seemingly disappeared from the face of the earth.
WB owns the rights to Search, but stupidly consigned it to
"overseas only" syndication hell for eternity. I seriously doubt
this great series will ever get released on dvd. I'm just glad
another fan in Australia had the good fortune of recording the
entire show way back in the late 70's when beta and vhs
first hit the scene. That's the only way to
aquire dvd copies of it. Great theme by Dominic Frontiere!

Loved the music. Really think it needs to be released on cd. This is one of the few things Im still waiting for from the seventies since Parallax View was released. FSM?? Anyone listening.

Never got to see most of it as on too alte and I was a wee lad.

Yes I am also waiting from the 70's on cd Star Trek Animated but cant ever see that happening and the music from Buck Rodgers the TV show or a complete Stu Phillips from TV

Ironically that was one of the few name of the game episodes I saw as it was released as a movie and aired on tv. Would love to that on dvd.

I agree strongly. For those looking for the same John Gregory themes also try Six Million dollar Themes. Cheaper and easier to find. May have found mine on Amazon.

A couple of interesting things. Gregory's version of It takes a thief is the only one that comes close. Multiple tv compilations including the more famous ones including 100 greatest tv themes seem to use some first season??? them I've never heard and that is absolutely horrible. I one wrote them telling them they have to take a look at which version of a theme use.

Second, Gregory's work is what Makes the very rare and expensive Mad Mad World of Soundtracks Volume 1 and 2 so valuable until you realize most of what you want is from John Gregroy and available on cheaper albums. For example Volume 1 of Mad Mad World of Soundtracks has It Takes a Thief and promises Six Million Dollar Man(but is Gregory's excellent version).

There's a show, Six Million dollar, Id like to see someone release all the music from. It's universal/mca and you'd think given success fo getting other scores released.............

Stroppy, the simple answer to your question (using the word SOUNDTRACK; which supposes that the actual music used in the film or series has been released) is NO.

Although to be fair, the second post in the thread said that too.

It would be a boring forum indeed if posts consisted of one-word answers big grin
