2010 looks like being THE year for soundtrack releases.

Indeed:

BLACK SUNDAY, BULLITT, PROPHECY, THE CAR, ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, THE SPIRAL ROAD, DRAGONSLAYER, SPARTACUS, POLTERGEIST, THE GOONIES, ROBOCOP, STAR TREK III - THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, OUTLAND, MARATHON MAN, THE PARALLAX VIEW, THE CINCINNATI KID, THE VENETIAN AFFAIR, WHITE LIGHTNING, GATOR, STRAW DOGS, THE TAMARIND SEED... seems already like soundtrack heaven (some of the above not yet confirmed though)!

NP: Lalo Schifrin: THE VENETIAN AFFAIR

Well, I'm not really into those posts that just say something pointless like "Cool!" or "ORDERED!"

Here, here. LOL

C'mon boys, you can do it - give "Tamarind Seed" to the people! It really is a major, MAJOR gap in the Barry discography! (When a score like "Mike's Murder" sees the light of day and not this one... ah, well...)

but Ive heard others say its nothing overly special from JB. Still a release would be very welcome, like so much more of JBs work!!

Believe it or not, I find this score quite boring. It has a nice main theme but it is, for me, one of Barry's weakest scores.
However, I would welcome a CD release with open arms as any JB fan would.

It's better than MIKE'S MURDER- almost anything is.

A friend of mine gave me a copy of this score on cd, it's a really beautiful score.
I realise after checking on Soundtrack Colllector that this score doesn't appear to have ever been released offically.
So I wondered if there are any plans by any of our favorite Film Music Specalists to release this fabulous John Barry score.
It's not a long score (30 minutes or so) but I found it a great listen.

Good score but no one seems to have mentioned the forgotten movie itself. A rather good, expensive Blake Edwards romantic thriller, London based but with international locations. And likable leads in Shariff and Andrews. Also, a good turn by Anthony Quale as a Scotland Yard detective.

I completely agree.

The story, I believe, goes that Barry gave a cassette copy of the score to a fan way back in the '70s. (i.e. don't assume Barry has a copy now.)

What is interesting is that this had an alternative take of the main title theme.

I believe Peter is correct about the Silva Screen story.

Is there a chance? There's always a chance. But right now, I think the score is on the missing list.

Of course, a label could officially do something from the cassette source. Hey, can't be any worse than using acetates, which has been done before.

Yes, though this assumes the original cassette source is available. Some of the tracks on the unofficial CD that I've heard sound as though they've been "improved" in some way, so I think it would be preferable to get as close to the masters as possible.

Incidentally, as far as I know the masters are still on the missing list.

I'm sure that I've mentioned the film ... several times (in other threads). Certainly not a "top 50" film but very much a "highly enjoyable" film which I've seen - perhaps - five or six times. I saw it at the cinema on its release and, after several TV viewings (from which I recorded much of the music), I now have the UK DVD release - pretty good quality. I think it's because I know the film and music so well that I think it is such an excellent score. It works so well with the visuals and now every piece of music brings those visuals back. Perfection!

Oh, and Anthony Quale does not play a Scotland Yard detective; he is the ubiquitous spy-master. smile

More than 3 years later (although I wasn't here back then) and I'm STILL waiting for the music from "The Tamarind Seed." There's a nearly 10 minute suite in the 2-CD set "Zulu," but I continue to long for the soundtrack. Used to be able to stream the movie through Netflix and they had a pretty good copy of it, but was overjoyed when it was finally released on DVD. Someone singled out Anthony Quayle, who is wonderful (have always loved him), as is Daniel O'Herlihy, not to mention Julie Andrews and Omar Shariff. Plus there's the delicious Oscar Homolka as the grizzled old (and rather befuddled) KGB chief! But those of us who love the music (and not everyone here does) long to have it! (I notice that Amazon has the "Zulu" 2-CD set with this suite, but they won't let you buy that cue separately -- it's one of those ALBUM ONLYs.)

That suite is one of my most beloved pieces of music. I even prefer the nice warmer and more 'round' sound of the orchestra. And I don't miss the guiro -- if you don't mind me saying so.

That said, I'd jump on a release of the original score of course.

In the new posting on possible new releases in 2014, someone seems to feel that we may finally see a release of the soundtrack. Hope springs eternal!

"The Tamarind Seed" has finally been released on DVD in the U.S., as part of a bargain priced "two-fer" no less.

Interesting. I guess it was close to 2 years ago that I bought it, which, now that I look more closely, appears to be a Korean release from 2008. I had no problems with it and probably won't buy it again. The picture looks decent and the audio is Dolby stereo, although when I watch it on my new universal Blu-ray player I have a 6" inch border on both sides and a 5 1/2" border on the bottom and top, taking away at least 12" of my 55" inch screen's potential, which is frustrating.

Follow-Up: There seems to be this double pack that recently came out with "Brief Encounter" and "The Tamarind Seed." Wonder if that's the one that was mentioned here?

And to Steve Johnson re "It's better than MIKE'S MURDER - almost anything is."

I have you know I have a sentimental attachment to "Mike's Murder" (starring Debra Winger and Mark Keyloun) and have come close to buying the movie a few times, although the DVD seems a mite over-priced. Have long had the soundtrack LP, though I've not played it in DECADES!!!

Incidentally, the only reason I bought the LP of the "Mike's Murder" soundtrack was because it had 3 songs by Joe Jackson and a friend at work was a huge Joe Jackson fan and I promised to record them for him -- and I don't recall the John Barry music was used much in the movie.,

Off topic re: Mike's Murder ... I ripped some music from a TV broadcast many years ago ... it amounted to about 15 mins or so (I think), though I would not have bothered with very short pieces. I know that the CD release - as very welcome as it is - is different in some respects, though after a number of plays of the CD I can't now recall the film variations.

It's not an easy listen but it pays dividends and whilst I may not place it in my top 50 JB scores that's only because there are so many other JB scores I enjoy more.

On topic: The Tamarind Seed score is so very good ... I continue hoping for a release (even more than a release of Raise the Titanic).

Right, or a release of Don't Raise The Bridge Lower The Water. Or the hilarious Start The Revolution Without Me. The latter was soooooooooo funny, with Hugh Griffith, though it starred Gene Wilder and Donald Suthernald as mismatched twins and I have fond memories of John Addison's music.

And shortly after posting the above I bought the "Mike's Murder" DVD.
