I could never have imagined it until it happened, but John Barry and Merle Haggard made a great team on "The Man in the Mask." Yes, its time to re-evaluate this movie and score. And re-release both.

I'd buy the complete score if Intrada put it out. Would tie in nicely with their release of the new Lone Ranger score (and David Shire's Return to Oz complete would tie in nicely with their release of the new Oz the Great and Powerful score). Yavar

*Bump* Now that we've got the Howard the Duck discussion going along.... what about LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER? I would've thought that with the recent remake Barry's score would've gotten some attention, but all we've got now is Hans Zimmer's latest turd . Seriously though, the legal rights situation with LEGEND must be a walk in the park nowadays. What's going on? Alex The problem with Lone Ranger is everything is missing — session elements, LP master. We keep searching...

A label that makes re-recordings should ask Nic Raine if he's interested in this one. We heard around here that he did not like THE BLACK HOLE, before the OST was rescued from an obsolete digital tape format, but maybe he'd do RANGER.

I've been a John Barry fan for over 50 years. I would gladly buy the lp presentation on CD, an expanded release, and/or a re-recording if any of the above should materialize. However, this is one of Barry's lesser efforts and no one will or should re-record it. Use that time and money on something that truly needs a re-recording, Barry or not.

We heard around here that he did not like THE BLACK HOLE, before the OST was rescued from an obsolete digital tape format, but maybe he'd do RANGER. I seem to recall it was James Fitzpatrick who didn't like The Black Hole, and not Nic Raine. Either way, what it all comes down to is how profitable a Lone Ranger re-recording would be, and I am afraid the costs might be higher than any sort of profit. Alex Actually I think both James and Nic were underwhelmed by The Black Hole. And they're not alone, I recall many of Barry's better known long time fans thought at the time that The Black Hole was his weakest score to that date, even weaker than Game Of Death which Barry's long time fans had also been disappointed with. In fact, prior to Raise The Titanic and Somewhere In Time in 1980, both of which absolutely delighted his long-time fans, people were beginning to wonder Barry had lost his magic touch with that run of rubbish films and underwhelming scores like Game Of Death, The Betsy, Star Crash and The Black Hole. Of course, I'm not one of them—I love both Game of Death and The Black Hole. Many others do too. I also quite like The Betsy and Star Crash although at least the latter feels like Barry by numbers. I'm just saying The Black Hole was quite divisive among long time Barry fans back in 1979. Many of Barry's devoted fans loved it, many didn't. And I mean many didn't. Like I say, along with Game of Death it was probably his least popular score to that date, among the long time fans. However, time has been kind to The Black Hole—very kind—and it's become a bit of a cult classic among film scores in spite of, at the time, getting a bum rap at the time from many of the Barry faithful. Cheers

Cheers Interesting info, Stephen. Since I hadn't been born back then, I have no idea how these scores were all received by Barry's fans, although clunkers like Game of Death, The Betsy and Star Crash must have been mind baffling (more as film choices than scores per se) coming from a composer with such a prestigious standing in the industry. Since the folks at Intrada have confirmed that there are no tapes available for Legend, I wouldn't mind a straight LP re-issue and transfer into a CD under their label. They've done it before - why not now? Alex
