I think there's an Italian Blu Ray including the iso score from the Criterion edition - but for sure not in PCM frown

Revisiting this old thread, I think this is most interesting:

* - Selections of music by composer Miklos Rózsa not used in the final film

I think this is not part of the released set, but why was Criterion under the impression that this could be included? Where would it come from?

While we now have the great Prague re-recording, it still would be great to have whatever is available of the original recording. A Blu-Ray re-visit by Criterion is also long overdue...

It was a music and effects track. The effects are not too intrusive and the track does include music not used in the film. Watching the film along with the music and effects track enables one to hear where the deleted music would have gone. I copied it onto two CDs for personal listening. There's 94 minutes of music in all which I split into 30 tracks.

I wasn't aware that the isolated track uses music not in the movie. That makes it even more interesting: where does it come from?

My guess is the M&E track was made for foreign markets after the war, and had to be reconstructed from scratch using music only tracks and the final composite track for sequences that feature prominent sound effects (like the storm). Apparently, some of the original film versions could not be located and in these instances, either alternate versions were used or tracked music from other parts of the film. Unfortunately, the alternate tracks are heavily edited to fit the picture : you only get bits and pieces, and it's often hard to figure out if they're tracked and what they were originally composed for. There's an alternate opening to the storm sequence and with some editing you can get a decent expanded version of the genie flight and some more Jaffar's boat music where the original film features a rather ugly edit ("The Princess Abducted", on the Tadlow).
