I love “How Beautiful You Make Me” in the film. Such a haunting combination of Hepburn's searing performance, images and music.

On whether THE LION IN WINTER or PLANET OF THE APES should have won the Oscar, gee haven't we done that loads of times already?

Please, just for once, can we talk about one of the greatest scores of the 60s (THE LION IN WINTER) without it becoming about Jerry Goldsmith and his lack of Oscars?

Cheers

Yeah, I really couldn't care less. I lost respect for the Motion Picture Academy and its "awards" as a signifier of true merit a long time ago (like when I was around 16).

Why did Goldsmith's PLANET OF THE APES lose to Barry's THE LION IN WINTER? Was it because Academy voters were so perceptive in their aesthetic judgements that they voted the win to a score that truly was "the best"? I don't think anyone but shallow dipshits would really contend that.

More likely it was this simple.... PLANET was released in February of 1968, and LION was released in October of 1968. The Academy is notorious for having a very short memory for films released early in the year. It's also true that if a well-financed campaign is not launched to promote a nominee to Academy voters, you're chances are that much more hindered. In a nutshell, the Academy Awards are bullshit.

So, this is all just my personal emotions talkin' here.... JERRY WAS ROBBED!!!!!

Ironically, the way I'm feeling right this moment after yet ANOTHER supermarket trip I'd be more inclined to play The Omen rather than The Lion in Winter...

Fa la la la la la, la la la la!

TG (aka shallow dipshit, by the way) smile

I guess I'm a shallow dipshit too, then LOL!

Okay, so the AFI lists PLANET OF THE APES and not THE LION IN WINTER. So what? I can find polls that list THE LION IN WINTER and not PLANET OF THE APES. What does any of that prove? And besides AFI stands for AMERICAN film institute. The list is all American films. Quelle surprise!

Look, PLANET OF THE APES is a great score. A fantastic one. But so is THE LION IN WINTER.

Now, can we get over the 1969 academy awards already?

Cheers

So, this is all just my personal emotions talkin' here.... JERRY WAS ROBBED!!!!!

... That evening famous composer G. went home after Academy Awards ceremony. Suddenly, another composer, B. attacked him and stolen his Oscar©.

According to some Jerry fans this is that happened in 1969, eh?

HEY! Forget the 1969 awards... in Google seaching the nominees for Best Score from Academy history I discover this for 1973. The nominees for Best Original Score (not a musical):

The Way We Were -- Marvin Hamlisch (Winner)
Cinderella Liberty -- John Williams
The Day of the Dolphin -- Georges Delerue
Papillon -- Jerry Goldsmith
A Touch of Class -- John Cameron

I knew Goldsmith didn't win, but.... THE WAY WE WEREN'T won over Goldsmith's score to PAPILLON?!!!!!!!!

To quote Dustin Hoffman.... I'M DYIN' OVER HERE!!!!

My favorite non musical Christmas score!! Goldsmith must've gotten a few pointers from listening to Barry's use of the chorus in the score (remember the score that won him his only Oscar - "The Omen"?), because it's truly magnificent!!

Can't people let things go?

Aren't people supposed to mellow with age?

Is it just me, or are Jerry Goldsmith fans THE most rabid of film music followers?
Where most other fans are happy to wax lyrical about their favourite composer, without having it be to the detriment of others, it seems Goldsmith fans have a conspiracy theory to go with every perceived injustice that was visited upon this God of Gods.
I consider myself a huge Goldsmith fan, from the late 70's, when I first got into him, to the late 80's/early 90's. I really like most of his scores from 1964 to around 1990, along with some others after that. He was the second film composer I really got into and for many years he was in a 3-way contest with Williams and Horner for possession of my heart smile
But I have perspective and also a cynical side which helps me call a spade a spade.

If film music was politics, I think Goldsmith fans would be the terrorists!! wink

Happy Christmas Everyone !!! smile

The first time I saw The Lion In Winter was a television showing in spring of 1983 — I had seen High Road To China, with its beautiful love theme, in the theater earlier that day. I had registered that the music was by John Barry in the theater as I was already familiar with The Black Hole, and the one-two punch of seeing both those films with their respective scores in one day was significant.

That summer came all of the James Bond movies…

As for the Oscars, Golden Globes, MTV Movie Awards, People's Choice Awards, IMDB ratings, ABC News/Washington Post polls, Scholastic questionnaires, and whatnot… I just don't give a $#!+. Both The Lion In Winter and Planet of the Apes are two of may favorite scores for very different reasons. I like them both, and that's good enough for me.
