Wow, these are some really great answers/overviews and suggestions!
Thanx a lot, you guys! I will definitely give the show(s) a go. Just have to figure out what I want first!

Whenever I decide to start binging an old tv show I prefer to chose shows with score released.
(like I did with The Leftovers and Penny Dreadful).
There is nothing worse than watching a tv show and fall in love with a specific cue that appears, only to find out none of it has been released (done that too many times before, lol!).

I am almost tempted to start with DS since I know it now actually has two box sets of score released! haha! big grin

Aside from Voyager (which just has one box set at the moment), all of the Trek shows are pretty covered as far as score releases go. While I think DS9 is the best Trek show, I'm hesitant to recommend it as a starting place if only because you get the most out of the pilot (and earlier seasons) if you've seen TNG. But it's not necessary and you can fill in the gaps. It would be like starting Angel if you hadn't seen Buffy, for another comparison.

That is exactly what I did back in 1999, and I never regretted it.

Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly doable. Both shows provide enough exposition for you to get the general gist of what you've missed. It's really character things, like that early Angel episode where Buffy visits and you're missing the full context of their relationship.

(But in retrospect, DS9 has even less of that because TNG wasn't serialized like Buffy and didn't pay as much attention to its characters.)

Buffy didn't appeal to me when it premiered, so I completely ignored it. When Angel premiered I tuned in for its first episode and every one since, because the promos did appeal to me (they played up the 'Batman' aspect of the character and action) and I found Angel himself perfectly relatable given his lone wolf personality. It was mainly Cordelia who I didn't understand, and since Doyle and later on Gunn were two characters unique to Angel's show, they were sort of my guides into that universe so when a Buffy reference would occur, it would be lost on me but not to such a point it would be a detriment. When season 3 started I was able to go back and check out Buffy reruns as that was the same year it got syndicated.

Rewatching DS9 over the last few months, the only two things that viewers need to know is largely relayed in its first season - Sisko had a bad history with Picard, and the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. The rest (Duras sisters, Q) were minor enough.

It quickly built its own history that all those references were either left behind or simply didn't resonate because they weren't dependent on them.

Angel and DS9 are the same for me: better than what came before them. That's not to knock what came before, not at all. Just a preference / sense of favoritism.

Getting on topic again razz

This looks like a great release. I'm grateful there's so much Jay Chattaway stuff on the 4th disc. I always preferred him over Dennis McCarthy because within the Rick Berman boundaries he was able to noticeable music (for episodes like TNG's Darmok, DS9's Our Man Bashir & Call to Arms, VOY's Scorpion or ENT's North Star). Somehow he had a very keen sense of knowing when to break the 'sonic wallpaper' rule and still write beautiful music that was accepted by the producers.

There's still one tiny bit of disappointment though. I was kind of hoping to finally hear the Klingon Opera piece by David Bell:

Hopefully that will be on the Leftovers Collection that is yet to be released.

For what it's worth, I tried to get my boyfriend started on Trek with TNG but he wanted something more serialized, so we skipped to Emissary and he took to it immediately. The topics you mention are about all I had to explain to him aside from some very general background (they expect you to care about O'Brien already because he was on the other show, that sort of thing).

Greatly looking forward to this set, lots of great selections from all the composers and it'll be nice to get more tracks from David Bell.

Some of you guys are making it seem like you need a master's degree in Star Trek Studies to watch television.

But seriously, the franchise overviews posted above are potentially quite useful.

I'm so excited about this release. Practically every selection is wish list material for me. Will be ordering as soon as it's available!

While I'm super-bummed that nothing from David Bell's "The Sons of Mogh" made the cut I'm absolutely thrilled to see his work from "Treachery, Faith, and the Great River" represented. This entire set looks like a great companion piece to Volume 1 and can't wait to give La-La Land my gold-pressed latinum next week! Thanks so much to LLL and everyone who worked on this for putting this set together! What a great way to start the year!

Ive been on a DS9 music kick lately and even though Im super duper happy and grateful for the 15 hours of music we have from Deep Space Nine, Im always hoping for one more volume. Theres a handful of tracks Id die to have and listen to over and over.

Same here.

I listen to the countless STAR TREK - Volumes almost every week since their arrival. Those scores are phenomenal.

But.... I would die for a third volume of ENTERPRISE, DS9 & VOYAGER.

La-La-Land Records managed to cover almost everything i always wanted, but here are the few scores i still keep my hopes up for:

Dennis McCarthy "Whispers" (Season 2)
The scene where O'Brien manages to escape the
station

"Meridian" (Season 3)
The gorgeous love theme and the couple of cues
at the episode's climax.

Jay Chattaway "Equilibrium" (Season 3)
Almost everything related to Dax's gorgeous
piano theme, as well as the final cue, where Jadzia
and Joran join in the pool.

"To the death" (Season 4)
The final battle in the forrest

More music from "By inferno's light"
and "Call to arms"

"Time's Orphan" (Season 6)
The long farewell scene at the end

"Chimera" (Season 7)
The last couple of minutes, when Kira and Odo
reunite

Those cues would really mean the world to me. I hope others see it the same way.

thank you so much La-La-Land Records for all your beautifully arranged collections!

I totally agree. I can't ask for more Trek Series scores as we've been blessed with so many awesome releases over the last 10 years especially. Nonetheless there are indeed a few pieces I would love to see released still from both DS9 and TNG.

From DS9 my favorite missing piece is from The Magnificent Ferengi, Season 6 Episode 10, about 25 minutes in, the scene where the Ferengi chase the Vorta from the infirmary to the shuttle bay and back. Best unreleased piece from Dennis McCarthy in my opinion. Dramatic yet playful at the same time, kind of unique.

Yes, this is indeed one of McCarthy's standout pieces from the last couple of seasons. I've totally forgotten about that one.
Great cue!!

Concerning TNG, I am very happy with everthing we've got and nothing particular comes to mind.

But ENTERPRISE and VOYAGER still have a lot of treasure, i'd really love to have, all from composer Jay Chattaway:

ENTERPRISE

More music from
" THE CATWALK" [Evacuation cue and prelude to entering the cloud]
" ANOMALY" [Opening Cue / Marauder Attack]
"AZATI PRIME" [everthing there is smile ]
"ZERO HOUR" [everything there is smile ]
and "TERRA PRIME"

VOYAGER

"THE CLOUD" [Opening Cue],
"MANUEVERS" [The first battle cue after the teaser],
"TUVIX" [the final few minutes]
and more music from
"RISE" [the whole finale],
"DISPLACED" [the whole finale],
"DRIVE" and "SHATTERED"

Another 4-Disc Set with Leftovers from all four Berman series would be like the last piece of this outstanding puzzle to me.

I'm not complaining, just keeping my hopes up and my fingers crossed

I have most of what I want too, but would love the first few cues from One Little Ship, Crossover, Empok Nor, The Emperor’s New Cloak,

And a few others. Id love more David Bell scores from the shows too!

Is there a particular reason why LLL stopped at just two collections for each series? ToS is getting reissued. They could just release a smaller number (maybe 2,000) of Vol. 3 and keep us diehards happy. I would jump on a third 'Voyager' collection. There are still lots of great cues left unreleased.

The reason is always going to be sales. The cost to license and produce these sets has to be leveled against what potential sales would be and LLL has intimated in the past that the TOS & TNG sets sold fine, but the sets focused on subsequent series were tough to move, less appealing to just the casual soundtrack fans.

Maybe if we had a thread where we noted episodes and cues from DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, we could talk MV into doing occasional 2CD sets that have cues from all three series on them, to fulfill fan requests.

There was already a majorly long FSM thread that did that job, I can find the link, but it was used to curate that last 4 disc set of music from TNG through ENT. This is my favorite period of music from the Trek TV legacy as well, but I'm also very Zen about the fact that we have more on disc than we could have ever hoped for and can continually enjoy from here on out. Now we can create our own playlists from the sets, our own suites, craft our own unique listening experiences and be happy with what we got!
