I am so excited about this release, but am wondering if it completely negates the previous discs. Does it contain everything that has already been released? I'm already hearing comments about the disco track missing. While dated (and nostalgic) it does belong so as to make the puzzle complete. Based on the description from LLL it sounds like some unique choices were made by John Williams in deciding the presentation of this score. I'm curious if we are getting the most complete version of this that we will ever have. It would be a shame if there is any of the composer's beautiful music missing from this. Still, an instant purchase for me. Very, very happy that LLL is able to release this.
I really like the alternate “two-lane w. distant light anomaly” cover.
Modelmaker Greg Jein also did an alternate “two-lane w. distant light anomaly” wide-angle cover for the Criterion laser-disc back in 1990. La-La Land has done well to follow that lead.
Thank You La La Land Records! This is John Williams "personal favourite" score of his... "There is something about Close Encounters" It has been 40 years... but here it is... FINALLY!
Will purchase this for sure! Question, does disc one or disc two have the original end credits?
Looks like Disc One features the Special Edition end credits (with “When You Wish Upon a Star” interpolated), while Disc Two features the original end credits (with a suite of the film’s various themes). Considering this is my third favorite film of all time (with my second, TITANIC, astoundingly being released the same day), it’s going to be an immediate purchase.
can anyone tell/surmise if the disco version is somewhere in here?
No disco track. It was nixed by the maestro himself
come on, JW, why you gotta be like that? disco versions are one of the great delights of the soundtrack world.
don't get me wrong I love you la la land and i am partaking in the majority of these offerings, but it's a bit disappointing that i can't retire anything to save shelf space. the song is arguably more important to titanic and james bond than most regular moves and then the disco version.
you guys do great work though, it's just a bit of a downer. thanks for communicating though, it's always appreciated.
Technically the "When You Wish Upon a Star" version is the original. It was quickly (and rather poorly IMO as both the film and soundtrack album can attest to) replaced by that suite when it tested badly in Dallas.

That very well could be. And I do recall something about the changes to the end titles. Personally I don't like the end titles of the Special Edition with the "When You Wish Upon A Star" references. I've always enjoyed the original 'edition' version as it was when I first viewed the film so many years ago and now appears on the Blu Ray.
