Apologies for the duplicate posts (which I've deleted), a result of the board memory timing out (please only click "post" once, I know it's annoying).

About The Haunting, I supervised the expanded CD assembly for Varèse Sarabande. It was quite some time ago and I forget all of the details, but we used everything Goldsmith recorded at the scoring sessions—and I even went to the AMPAS website to check his cue titles to make sure we had a recording of every cue he composed.

There were some passages in the finished film that seemed to be heavily tracked, which we did not recreate. If there were versions of cues that were manipulated on the dubbing stage to appear to be alternate versions—or created outside of Goldsmith's auspices, even if he wrote the underlying theme—we didn't have them...to be honest, it was hard to tell what was going on in some places from the final sound mix, and the cue sheet indicated heavy editing.

I hope people like the release when they hear it.

Lukas

Very nice surprise. This film did not deserve this music.

It's great to know all that much missed music is finally being released. But I DO have one quibble

It's not complete.

In fact, it's really dropping the ball.

They included the album version of...finally home????

No. There are 3 tracks they could very well have included.

First is the film version of "The Picture Album" which is drastically different (and shorter) than the album. Why not include both of these?

Second, is the film version of the final cue - when Eleanor joins the souls of the children. Again, vastly different from the album version. Another squandered opportunity.

Finally, the Victrola variation of the children's lullaby as Eleanor plays it when she enters the nursery near the end of the film - a truly haunting variation and it's a shame it wasn't included.

Nice job Varese...again.

Unless I am mistaken which if I am someone please explain. Otherwise...just one more reason I resent varese sarabande.

Maybe save your whining until after listening to it. Jesus...

I never bought the original album, but I think I'll buy this, it's Goldsmith & there's not much released that interests me these days. The film isn't great, but it gets a really bad rap for some reason, it was on TV in HD a few months ago & I found a lot in it to enjoy, not the least being the amazing production design, it all goes a bit bonkers at the end, but if it was released on Blu-ray would I buy it? Yes.

Thanks for the very interesting and helpful information. I'll pick this up eventually...

Interesting that this has been in the works for quite a while. Thanks Lukas for clearing up any confusion, and now knowing that you worked on this, I trust that it is indeed complete despite the concerns a couple people raised -- we all know how anal you are with getting this stuff right!

Varese really dropped the ball in not crediting Lukas Kendall and Jeff Bond in their press blurb, IMO. Like Michael Mattesino or Neil S. Bulk, those names are a mark of quality and perfectionism which reassures us all. I'm amazed Lukas didn't get a producing credit on the back cover, besides...just Robert Townson mentioned as "Executive Producer" when it sounds like Lukas was the one who put together this specific album. They've done it in the past (starting with Star Trek: Nemesis), so I wonder why no credit at all this time (well, hopefully one in the booklet, at least).

Lukas - Please forgive my annoying habit of prematurely voicing my opinion on something I haven't gotten all the facts straight on. I appreciate your patience and detailing what all was involved in bringing this wonderful score to a deluxe fruition. You have my sincerest apologies. Furthermore, I hadn't any idea that you were involved in the production of this CD and had I known I would have saved my thoughts because I know with your involvement it's going to be wonderful regardless of any discrepancies. So thank you and again you have my profound apologies.

Yavar - yeah, they usually do in some form.

Legitimate labels provide sound samples.

The film isn't great, but it gets a really bad rap for some reason,

Well possibly because it's an unscary suckfest with Lili Taylor acting her heart out to no avail (and an even worse live-action Scooby-Doo movie* than the two theatrical ones).

*Whoever made the Scooby comparison was right on target.

This is oldest trick in town done time and time previously .....it means that in 12 months or more another label or even Varese themselves will release the Complete Film score...........Goldsmith is a No.1 seller and has many many fans who like me will always buy his film scores time and time again for extra music no matter how long or small that may be ..........same goes for John Barry.........

Sigh... did you not read the post from Lukas Kendall who worked on this release? This is definitely the complete score with everything Goldsmith recorded. No other label can release this besides Varese. And I rather doubt Varese will ever revisit this a second time...at the most they might do an identical Encore release as they (surprisingly) did with their Deluxe Edition of Runaway. You are quite wrong in thinking a future release is going to render this obsolete. This isn't Star Wars or Indiana Jones. Show me the last time Varese did what you're complaining about.

I agree with both actually. Goldsmith does sell well. Also a good case would be the battle of the labels if we put POLTERGEIST II releases in mind. Anyways, this is Varese territory- so no contest here wink

Absolutely stoked for this release of THE HAUNTING. Been waiting years for this one.
I don't in any way agree with the moans here but on this point I would just mention..THE OMEN. A 'Deluxe' version and then .......

Yeah, the recently re-issued The Omen with all of the remaining (and surviving) pieces. But even that release left out the film takes. I also "hope" for an anniversary Final Conflict from them, and yes I would buy it, and yes I am a nerd, and yes I love it, as per my personal taste. But as for The Haunting, I think this one would settle it for me and I likely wouldn't care to get it again, no matter what extras they had. And anyway, this one seems quite definitive according to Lukas, so I am going with that.

Wow.. Nice going Varese. The Haunting looks fabulous , its a score I never originally owned because I don't know about the film/music, but I'm stoked with a JG deluxe edition, many thanks, Varese.

Wait, what? You don't think The 13th Warrior is that great? I like The Haunting for sure and am excited for this expanded release, but when it comes to the topic of Goldsmith scores in his last few years, The 13th Warrior and The Mummy are tops in my book.
