Would you please ask him if his scores for Orienta by the Markko Polo Adventurers still exist?

Yes, that is his album, released under the name the Markko Polo Adventurers. The track "Rain from Rangoon," written by Vernon Duke, easily makes my exotica top 10.

Does he know what the music in the "Birds Do It, Bees Do It" trailer might be?

I noticed Fried conducted Myrow's SOYLENT GREEN. Has he conducted any other composer's major work?

While sifting through the auction site I found a rare personal promotional release allegedly of Fried's "private collection". I have difficulty remembering, I believe POTATO was in the title, something like ONE PATATO, TWO PATATO. Searching soundtrackcollector.com I can't find anything.

I would also like to recommend Fried's Visions & Values - The Skirball Musical Experience; it is terrific and available at Amazon here:

One of the great under appreciated composers.
It's a crime that there is no cd of his music from ROOTS.
I smell lawyers.

Same here. I liked Fried's work for "Too Late The Hero" and "The Mystic Warrior" (strangely enough, one of his few television scores that's on C.D. though the miniseries is NOT on D.V.D. - calls out for a Warner Archive Collection release). He holds the distinction of being the only film composer who was nominated for scoring a feature documentary. Anybody out there for a C.D. release of "Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice"?

I found a TV movie that was nothing more than an edit of four episodes of "the Man Who Never Was", all four of which he scored, so I had the pleasure of finally hearing [some] his work for the show. some wonderful spy stuff. But of particular enjoyment for me, was a few minute long action/drama piece which I consider one of the best cues of it's type written for any TV series -- that good.

I think Gerry only conducted the classical montage that he arranged for the euthanasia sequence (replacing Myrow's original cue)—both are on our CD.

Gerald Fried has composed some really excellent filmmusic over the years and really deserves to be better known---and with more CD releases in the filmmusic realm. (I don't think I've ever seen or heard TIMBUKTU, but I've always wanted to view it and hear how Fried's score works within it.)

As for this claim by someone earlier.....

......He holds the distinction of being the only film composer who was nominated for scoring a feature documentary.....

I think even Mr. Fried would acknowledge the fine (and underrated) work of Oliver Wallace, who was Oscar-nominated in 1958 for his score for Disney's feature-length documentary, WHITE WILDERNESS.

Got it, Beethoven's Pastoral, I'll go and check it out again. I enjoy the FSM disc often, a big thank you for that one.

I'm excited to hear Fried's contribution to Mission Impossible on the new set. Anybody got words on that?

...and now, the work I believe is called "One Potato, Two Potato", still eludes me. I don't think I was dreaming.

ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO is a film from 1964 that stars Barbara Barrie as a mid-western divorcée who falls in love with and marries a black man and her ex is so disgusted he sues to have their child taken away from her and wins. It's a devastating film which won Barrie the best actress award at Cannes, I believe. Mr. Fried's score is simple and childlike, a jolly jig-like tune on the accordion, which is ultimately devastating. I rank it easily with TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and THE WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT in its effectiveness and capturing childhood innocence. I don't believe it has ever been released in any form, but a sound capture plays happily on my iPod all the time. It also stars James Earl Jones' father, Robert, as the father-in-law. A fascinating and brave movie for any time, but considering it was made in 1964, it's also truly visionary.

I love Gerald Fried's music. Hope he goes on forever, and in the good health he seems to be still enjoying!

As fortyone said above, his music is always so distinctive. In simplified terms it speaks to me in primary colours. So it lends itself to extremes, such as pure adrenalin-driven action, sheer terror, the sweetness of innocent love, and primitive civilizations. If you think about it, all of that was present in STAR TREK.

Ah - and music for chimpanzees! His music was always great for chimpanzees. I don't know if I need a hundred exclamation marks after that statement, but think of the chimpanzee for a moment... cute, loveable, primitive, savage... see?

And look at all those films he did with wild animals in them. Off the top of my head there's THE BEASTS ARE ON THE STREETS, MANEATERS ARE LOOSE and THE WILD AND THE FREE. And of course BIRDS DO IT, BEES DO IT. There's an upbeat tune going through my head at the moment and I know it's the End Titles for one of those. Clicking on the YouTube link for BIRDS/ BEES the second half is quite similar to that, so maybe the music for that trailer is Fried's after all.

Oh, don't forget to order the truly fun double CD of his cheapo early horrors, one of FSM's first releases. Still hanging around after 20 years! Unbelievable!

Gerald Fried - Live long and prosper! Even more.
