One that leaps out immediately: "Labyrinth". Just great David Bowie song after song, meanwhile I can't think of a single cue that stood out for me (except maybe that breif, although unreleased, piece at the end when she tells him he has no power over her) from Trevor Jones' dated [in a no-so-good way] synth score.

I'm calling Labyrinth a draw. I can't imagine the film without either. And I like the 80's sound!

Rocky 4

Yikes, no! The score is amazing, some of the songs are good too, like Hearts On Fire and No Easy Way Out, but also some stinkers among the songs IMO.

THE INCRDIBLE SHRINKING MAN-80- Not much of a score but I loved that end theme song by SUZANNE CIANI, GALAXY GLUE.

You mean The Incredible Shrinking Woman. I haven't seen or heard it, but I applaud Joel Schumacher for hiring Suzanne Ciani to do the score. She released some great albums on Private Music later in her career.

I pretty much hate films where they use songs to underscore scenes, rather than an orchestral score. The only example of a film where a song was better than the score, imo, is the film THE ODESSA FILE. Main Title is accompanied by "Christmas Dream", which is far better than the horrendous underscore that follows.

'Apocalypse Now' is mainly remembered for the use of Wagner and The Doors music. How much original score was in that?

About every Michael Mann film.

Heat is an exception.

And one new entry: The Lost Boys. Thomas Newman's score has it's moments, though most of the cool moments are related to Gerard McMann's excellent tone-setting song Cry Little Sister. (A dutch DJ once declared it The Song Of The Century, but alas, that was last centurysmile.) The soundtrack has even more cool songs, but they're mostly diegetic and their influence on the film is marginal.

I love that album!

CIRCUS OF HORRORS-60 -Score by Frank Reizenstein was effective, but somehow the song LOOK FOR A STAR, really worked perfect for the film and just became a classic.

Some of the Henry Mancini scores , could be neck to neck or the songs were more memorable then the instrumentations. While I really liked HENRY'S opening theme from THE PARTY-68- I loved both the vocal version of LITTLE TOO LOSE, by MS LONGET and the CHORUS version during the end. There are plenty other examples from HENRY'S film's.

I can't agree with the general statement as I'm sure there are many good examples of vocal underscoring ...

... but I do agree 100% re: The Odessa File ... a truly abysmal score, especially for such a mainstream film.

Skyfall.

Agreed smile ...

... and I don't think that much of the song (especially after the half-way mark!)

I agree too but I do like the song, including after the half way mark.

The song was written by Tony Hatch who wrote many songs and TV themes including one of my favourites for The Champions. ( more "infamously" he wrote the theme to Aussie soap Neighbours wink )

What about Last Action Hero? Pretty good songs from AC/DC and Megadeth.

About every Michael Mann film.

???

Care to elaborate?

Thief - no songs
The Keep - no songs
Manhunter - score better than songs
LA Takedown - only 1 song, not better than score
Last Of The Mohicans - Clannad song possibly better than score
Heat - songs better
The Insider - good songs, but quite good score too
Ali - bad songs
Collateral - songs not better than score
Miami Vice film - score just as good as songs
Public Enemies - ?

So then, Last Of The Mohicans, Heat, and possibly The Insider has better songs than score. IMHO.
