btw Johnny Carson certainly did not earn 'MILLIONS" of dollars.

At 5 times a week the yearly gross would be $50, 000. Half that and you get $25k.
SO, he made app. $750,000 in his lifetime.

You're right. Although looking at it another way, $25K in 1963 (the first full year of Carson's "Tonight Show") would be over $190K in 2014. So in today's dollars, he did indeed earn millions. (For that matter, there's no way the royalty remained unchanged at $200 for thirty years. So I don't think we have enough actual info for an audit here.)

This is how you do it...

One of David Cassidy's best bits!

I always loved Maltz's theme!

But the point is the same -- just because something can be done, that doesn't nullify the immorality of doing that thing.

"...just because we can do that thing, it does not necessarily mean we must do that thing."

I'm thinking of Glen Larson's credit on the Battlestar Galactica theme

That's likely a different case, since he and Stu Phillips shared credit from the beginning - plus unlike Roddenberry GAL actually has a musical background.

Well-researched piece here: http://startrekfactcheck.blogspot.com/2014/04/while-he-wanders-his-galaxy-gene.html

Great work!

Lukas

While "THE THEME" is credited to both men....

the 'FANFARE" (Where no man has gone before) I've seen solely credit to Courage and yet in other places it's credited to both of them.
It could be just a mistake on the part of whoever is making out the cue sheets on any given show, but it's a interesting question.
Ford A. Thaxton

In the old days you copyrighted music by printing out the music on a lead sheet.
It is possible the official document submited for copyright claim did not include the intro/fanfare.
So, there might be a seperate copyright/publishing record for "Fanfare from STAR TREK"

By all accounts, they wrote the theme together, or GAL handed the tune to Phillips to work out the final piece of music.
