at least we got a new 4k remaster blu-ray of Verhoeven's wonderful original...

Oh really? Is that out now?

Coming out on the 21st but a lot of retailers seem to be stocking it early.

YESSS!!! Thanks for the info smile

I will probably try to see it on cinema. I saw DREDD at home, was amazed and regretted not watching it in 3D.

Samples - http://www.amazon.co.uk/RoboCop-Pedro-Bromfman/dp/B00HVQJ7X2/ref=mb_oe_o

Check out "Title Card". Rest is, to put it lightly, not so promising...

He surely is a talented and capable composer.

But these samples sound like...

"Okay, Pedro, you ever heard the MV sound? That´s what we want."
- "Oh, I thought, this being Robocop, one could do a great homage to the legendary Poledouris score-"
"Poly-what? No, no, this is a new movie. The music must appeal to the kids!"
- "Yeah, sure, but-"
"We don´t have the time or the money for any orchestra by the way - the reshoots ate up all our extra-budget, and - let´s be frank - who cares about the music? Just make sure that something fills up the spaces between the sound design and the dialogue."
- "Wait, I am a real composer-"
"Nobody is interested in that, my friend. Nobody. In fact, audiences don´t like old school film scores anymore. It´s just too much, right? We are so much more subtle these days. Listen to Hans Zimmer, man. That guy is totally subtle. And inventive."
- "Yeah, but-"
"HEY! Do you want the gig or not?"

That's a funny post. Unfortunately, that's probably exactly how it went...

I haven't heard the samples, but it doesn't surprise me at all that this reboot would take the Zimmer approach with the score.

These soundclips remind me of the live-action TV series, which isn't a compliment.

Yeah, it does sound like TV score. Lots of the samples remind me of Person Of Interest (and that Title Card quote of Basil's theme is pathetic).

Pretty much. Better than hiring an orchestra for a score that doesn't need one though. If you are going to ask for a cheap sounding score you might as well not waste the time of an orchestra.

The other difference though is that most TV shows don't really need much of a score, so the cheap scores don't bother me. They rarely reach the level of distracting me from enjoying the show.

I can't imagine this one coming anywhere close to the quality of Poledouris's score.

I think it sounds pretty good!

LOL! That's one of the best posts I've ever read. And, yes, it is a faithful reflection of reality.
Gosh, did they really need to make this movie? The original is just too good to be even matched.

Listening to the clips and aside from the theme reprisal, a lot of the cues sound at first hearing like loud banging with standard MV motifs, you can even tell from the spectral views on soundcloud where the loops tie in. Maybe it works in the movie, Dredd's score certainly did and that is another loud score I don't enjoy away from the movie.

Granted, I only listened to the Title card so far. Didn't really liked it much, but I'm surprised that Poledouris' theme is back here at all - I did not expected that.

Do I have to eat my hat again?

The sample of "title card" with the Poledouris theme made me smile.

The rest still sounds very... familiar. But I regret making fun of the score prematurely.

Waiting for the whole score. Although Poledouris´ classic will not be surpassed. For me.

Dear Mr. Bromfman,

I sincerely apologize for prematurely making fun of your work.

Now that I have listened to the whole of it (and not just some samples with bad sound), I must congratulate you. This is a very fine piece of work. Of course, you´re employing some of the sound that contemporary blockbuster scores obviously have to feature. But you do it in an intelligent and restraint way.

I thoroughly enjoy your score, like the nod to the Poledouris theme, and I´m looking forward to your future work.

A hat-eating score fan

I listened to all of those clips. They sounded exactly the way I thought they would. Totally generic. You can even tell which temp track he is trying to emulate. Tron: Legacy, Inception and Dark Knight. I actually can hear the one note ascending Joker theme in there.

Yeah, they might have used the theme for the title card, but it doesn't seem to appear anywhere else in the score, so what's the point? It almost has a parody effect. Like when you hear the Jaws theme at the beginning of Airplane!

I liked the TV series score. At least it attempted to be orchestral, even if it didn't quite have the budget. I'd buy a CD.

This Bromfman score is pretty weak, though, other than the title card.
