Gave another listen today of the Goldsmith disc, words can't express how magnificent I think this score is. Add the powerful, dynamic sound and this is a must have. I have been so smitten with the Goldsmith portion that I failed to give Morten Stevens a spin yet.
The Stevens disc is EVERY bit as great as the Goldsmith disc..in fact, I like it better....IMHO, that is...:-)
Same here; the Goldsmith is a great foundation but I love the way Stevens handles the theme and orchestrates it heavier (his field of expertise after all). I especially love 'Precarious Meeting' at the start of episode 4.

So far I still prefer the Goldsmith, but hearing the Stevens without the film, I must admit it is growing on me and so I defer judgment! :-)
Since Stevens utilized Godlsmith's thematic marterial to score parts 3 and 4, I don't see how you can say you like his contribution better, unless you favor his adaptation/arrangements over Godlsmith's. That being said, I wish the Emmy had gone to both of them.

Well it shouldn't be a contest really, I think all four parts make a great score, but for me it is indeed the Stevens arrangement/adaptation of the theme that I prefer over Goldsmith's. And I credit Goldsmith for coming up with it, but I just like the way Stevens uses it better. I have the same thing for Michael Small's arrangement of the Jaws theme, which is also busier than the Williams.

Exactly - I do favor Stevens' adaptations/arrangements/orchestrations over Goldsmith in this score - Goldsmith set down the foundation with his themes in parts 1 & 2 and Stevens, then took those themes and drove it all home, using them in his own great scores in parts 3 & 4.
Brilliant stuff - Track 19 ("Ram's Head") just blows me away - to me, along with that classic MASADA theme, this track is a MAJOR highlight of this great set...:-)
BOTH Composers should have received emmys, not just Goldsmith...:-)

How foolish to argue about which is "really better." I like the Goldsmith disc better, you like the Morty disc better. Okay. I'd love to see someone prove that one composer's music is better than another's. Someone here used to fancy that he could logically prove that Jerry Goldsmith was the best film composer of all time, and attempted (with predictable result) to do so on a number of occasions. Horsefeathers!
Just in case there haven't been said enough kind things about this release... It's golden, ya?! And I seem to dig Morton Stevens' music more than Goldsmith's, interestingly.

There are several cues from the Morton Stevens disc that should be re-labeled MASADA 5-O. I keep seeing images of Jack Lord driving the black mercury when listening.

Mort's music on this disc does not really remind me of his FIVE-0 music - however, the disc has that great Stevens sound, for sure. I was just playing this disc in my car the other day - just wonderful!
I like what Goldsmith did with disc one, but it's the Stevens disc two I reach for more often...:-)
Kudos to Jehannum for his sharp ears. If anyone else is still wondering why the Morton Stevens CD has such extreme stereo definition and unusual bass: It's because all the celli and basses have been moved to the left hand of the stereo spectrum instead of the right where they belong. The only exception seems to be "Sheva Gives Again". The unfortunate result is that some melodic lines get kind of lost in the mix, and sometimes the right channel is almost mute. A pity about this otherwise great release.
