I agree. Though I'm also curious to see how 'Trucking' lines up with the corresponding scene

Something like this, if I've guessed the timings right. No telling how much the edit changed from when the cue was written. That last crescendo MIGHT occur when Neary freezes while being implanted with the image of DT.

Awesome. Scene is better without it, but still, this score is awesome.

Another clip from years ago when I first did this. The extended unused cue for this scene...

I need to just shut up and wait a few days for my copy to arrive, but on the off chance anyone sees this and knows the answer off-hand, I'm dying to know if this release contains the entire 'Stars and Trucks' cue. The original Arista and the '98 release both had the truncated version that featured just the first 4 bars of the brass motif, before jumping to the conclusion.

Yes, it appears to be the full version here.
Definitely longer than the last edition.

I think you lined up "Trucking" perfectly. Great job!

Gotta say the more highly resolved brass peaks in this material really makes this album a superior audio experience to its previous incarnations.

That's totally awesome! As powerful as the scene was without music, I like it with music too. Though I think the scene of the UFO moving vertical got one of the biggest laughs in the theater, and I think music would've ruined that moment.

Played the Dropbox “Trucking” video. Works for me. Wish it didn’t have all those repeats.

I've seen CE3K over 400 times in the past 40 years, and I never even NOTICED that that music was nowhere in the film! Great job to the guy who did that, but maybe mix it a little quieter!
I have to say, though, that Spielberg and Williams were right in NOT using the music.... it takes away from the emotions of the scene. THAT scene, probably more than any other in the film, was the one that made me look up at the sky with different eyes when I walked out of the theatre that cold December night back in '77.

Me too! I don't know if I've watched the film 400 times, but I've seen it many times over decades and I always thought that music was in the film.

Wow. Really nice job. Williams nailed every moment in that scene. Pitch perfect.

And YET: Still better without music. That feeling of a totally ordinary mid-western summer night that suddenly has THINGS in it is perfectly aided with the ambient sound without music.

I feel the same about a lot of music that was dialed out of The Empire Strikes Back. Gorgeous music, better without it.

Yeah it works with or without the music. Williams indeed nailed it. But give credit where credit is due, the scene sans music works because of the exceptional "sound design".

Playing this release today. It really is a brilliant score. There are so many textures and layers. So many opposing emotions to emulate in one film. Suspense, horror, action, wonderment, romance. Yet the whole experience comes together in unity. It would've been so easy to have a few standout cues and the rest minimalist underscore. Instead he wrote his brains out. It's easy to just lump this in with his other greats at the time. But those in some ways are much easier scores to write for, as they're basically straight forward action/adventure yarns.

Glad you enjoyed the 'Trucking' cue over picture!

Also, I got the album, and LOVE it. First question I have is, has anyone figured out where the unused cue 'Another Vision' was to occur? My guess is it went with the deleted jello moment at the outdoor block party scene.

...and did someone mention unused Empire music? I've had a lot of fun with that, too...

...has anyone figured out where the unused cue 'Another Vision' was to occur.

It was supposed to underscore the moment when Roy sees Devils Tower in his shaving cream, before it was replaced with 'Vision Takes Shape'

So I just watched the short but interesting feature highlighting Spielberg's Super 8 footage shot during the making of the film, and there's a neat shot of Williams conducting the orchestra as they perform the cue known as 'Stars and Trucks'. But the neat part is seeing the footage they're scoring to. It's an unused transition that takes us from the deleted scene of Neary on the roof of his house looking skyward...then cut to Lacombe doing the same...then cut to the gate being opened for the government trucks to be let out.
