Listening to this now, and I really like it. It's different - not only from the superhero score tradition, but also from the recent Zimmer onslaught (both of which I also like for their own merits). I do also appreciate the weird Winter Soldier track and its ilk - it's not a track I would likely queue up on its own, but it fits the character, the tone of the film, and the score as a whole in my opinion.
After reading the complaining, I was expecting a lot more electronic/dissonance, but there they are: orchestral cues, some rousing and some lovely and some tense, all over every non-action track. "The Smithsonian," "An Old Friend," "Taking a Stand," "Frozen in Time," etc - that's just in the first half of the score.
I've been debating whether or not I should order this. The samples left me mixed. And the music didn't really stick out enough for me in the actual movie, but your positive opinion of the score has gotten me somewhat interested in buying it some day.

Funny I have the opposite feeling about the music in SHIELD. Not that I don't like a more orchestral approach but I find the music in the show a bit "off" and silly sounding. So much that I find it detracts from enjoying the show sometimes. Prob due more to McCreary then it having an orchestral score. Don't think he is as good as the pedestal everyone around here puts him on.
Agree with the first part — it just doesn't work for the small (and I emphasize SMALL) screen adventures on SHIELD. Hokey.

[First I will say that I’m a Chris Evans fan, having enjoyed his performances in Cellular, Fantastic Four and the surprisingly entertaining Push. So if anything, I was bias towards giving Captain America: The First Avenger a great review. However, I was really disappointed with how the film turned out and it’s one of the few Marvel movies that I didn’t buy on blu-ray after its release.]
Also, it's funny how people like/dislike the same particular movie. Personally, I think Captain America The First Avenger is the best of all Marvel superhero movies made, precisely because it carries an old-fashioned feeling in it. For me, it's a movie more in the vein of Rocketeer than any of today's plain high-tech extravaganzas, both its storytelling and its original music, therefore much closer to my heart.
Alan Silvestri's scores for G.I.Joe, The Avengers, and especially Captain America (on top of the three) are some of his all time bests. IMHO, the same high quality as Predator and BTTF, or at least close. These are examples of scores with real theme/counterpoint/rhythm combined, where the music is dramatic, evolves, and has something to say, as any superhero score should be!
I'm sorry, but I refuse to accept the monotonic wallpaper drones that are today's common denominator. Especially for a superhero movie score, where adventure should be the point. With regard of this, if compared with some other composer's work, I'll say Captain America could only be matched by John Powell's X-Men Last Stand.
So, I must be the only one here not happy with Henry Jackman's assignment.

dont tell me its a "shaky camera" film????!!
I didn't notice any shaky cam.
Its there, but they dont do it enuf to ruin the film.
