Listening to this now, and I really like it. It's different - not only from the superhero score tradition, but also from the recent Zimmer onslaught (both of which I also like for their own merits). I do also appreciate the weird Winter Soldier track and its ilk - it's not a track I would likely queue up on its own, but it fits the character, the tone of the film, and the score as a whole in my opinion.

After reading the complaining, I was expecting a lot more electronic/dissonance, but there they are: orchestral cues, some rousing and some lovely and some tense, all over every non-action track. "The Smithsonian," "An Old Friend," "Taking a Stand," "Frozen in Time," etc - that's just in the first half of the score.

I've been debating whether or not I should order this. The samples left me mixed. And the music didn't really stick out enough for me in the actual movie, but your positive opinion of the score has gotten me somewhat interested in buying it some day.

Funny I have the opposite feeling about the music in SHIELD. Not that I don't like a more orchestral approach but I find the music in the show a bit "off" and silly sounding. So much that I find it detracts from enjoying the show sometimes. Prob due more to McCreary then it having an orchestral score. Don't think he is as good as the pedestal everyone around here puts him on.

Agree with the first part — it just doesn't work for the small (and I emphasize SMALL) screen adventures on SHIELD. Hokey.

I tend to agree with that although honestly Agents of SHIELD itself doesn't work very well on the small screen (although the last two episodes were better).
I loved Winter Soldier--the score I thought was fine in the film, exciting at points. My only real complaint was he had to throw in the goddamn Inception sound--seriously, I get that the first couple of times a producer would say "Oooh, I love that sound from Inception, please put it in the movie!" When it gets to the dozenth time you'd think somebody would step in and say hey, it's not cool anymore. Maybe when we get to the second or third dozenth time...
I didn't realize the opening was tracked but that makes sense--seemed a very adept use of the Silvestri music. I liked the Smithsonian stuff too.
What amazes me is now I think Captain America is my favorite Marvel movie character! The whole time I was growing up Cap was definitely a fringe character for me, just a curiosity representing some Marvel past I hadn't paid attention to. But he's really well-used in these movies. You have to credit Chris Evans for his performance and I give great props to the two guys who wrote and directed Winter Soldier--very smart, well-done action (I particularly like that most of it was done practically which gave it a much more immediate, visceral feel) and an excellent story. Certainly a candidate for the best Marvel film so far.

Chris Evans is perfect here. I agree he has become my favorite Marvel movie hero. And after seeing the movie today, my thought is the score worked like gangbusters . A more "traditional" fully orchestral score would have worked fine too, but this one did the job.

May have to check out the album now. The samples originally didn't wow me, but I liked it in the movie quite a bit. Hopefully the album is as entertaining.

Am I the only one obsessed with this score? Just saw the film for a 2nd time and I can 't get enough of the score. Perfect fit for the film. Doesn't bang you over the head with some heroic theme but instead works the emotional weight of the film. Love it and just wish the Winter Soldier track on the album could have been switched with the awesome End Credit track.

I originally thought it would be awful, judging by the reviews. I'm a typical orchestra-loving guy, but seeing the film is integral to understanding/appreciating Jackman's score. His interview (posted above) also gave new insight into his process and thinking behind the Winter Soldier's theme/sound. I'm with you; might not be 'obsessed', but greatly enjoying this score by Jackman.

Yeah "obsessed" might be a little overstating but I can't remember when I played a new score over and over. Can't get enough of this sucker. I don't think much is missing from the album... Anyone pick out any cues not represented? I tried to find some but got side tracked because the movie is so good.

I don't remember any particular cues left out, with the exception of the end credits. I knew that was fantastic stuff when I heard it in the theater.

(unless the end credits material appears in the track titled 'Captain America' - does anyone with a better memory remember?)

Here's an editorial piece (that I don't totally agree with):

David, thanks for sharing that article. I think it is a good article. I don't know who David R is, but he makes some good points when he talks about the power of music to enrich movies. I liked his Shore, Silvestri, and Williams' examples.

That's funny... I'M actually named David R... but I don't agree with the article totally. Swear it isn't me!

Nearly $600,000,000 worldwide gross vs. distressed internet columnist. Seems about evenly matched.

Is this an article by one of the "classically trained and working composers" who can't seem to nail a gig?

Mombaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

I'm finding plenty to dig in this score: muscular, metallic mayhem, nightmarishly industrial dreamscapes, throbbing something-or-others, festering electronic wounds, sensitive sonic emotibots, testosterrific ostinato celli and good ol' fashioned ghostly synth vocalisms.

Prepare to give your mind a workout and your ossicles a rest. Wait, strike that. Reverse it.

To be honest, I bought this more out of Marvel Movieverse Completism than a pressing desire to have the music. But, a couple of listens through and I'm really enjoying it, especially the 9-minute Captain America track. Definitely a case of the CD having more to offer than was apparent watching the film. But then, maybe the movie was so good it distracted me from the score.

Bring on Guardians of the Galaxy - over to you Mr Bates...

[First I will say that I’m a Chris Evans fan, having enjoyed his performances in Cellular, Fantastic Four and the surprisingly entertaining Push. So if anything, I was bias towards giving Captain America: The First Avenger a great review. However, I was really disappointed with how the film turned out and it’s one of the few Marvel movies that I didn’t buy on blu-ray after its release.]

Also, it's funny how people like/dislike the same particular movie. Personally, I think Captain America The First Avenger is the best of all Marvel superhero movies made, precisely because it carries an old-fashioned feeling in it. For me, it's a movie more in the vein of Rocketeer than any of today's plain high-tech extravaganzas, both its storytelling and its original music, therefore much closer to my heart.

Alan Silvestri's scores for G.I.Joe, The Avengers, and especially Captain America (on top of the three) are some of his all time bests. IMHO, the same high quality as Predator and BTTF, or at least close. These are examples of scores with real theme/counterpoint/rhythm combined, where the music is dramatic, evolves, and has something to say, as any superhero score should be!

I'm sorry, but I refuse to accept the monotonic wallpaper drones that are today's common denominator. Especially for a superhero movie score, where adventure should be the point. With regard of this, if compared with some other composer's work, I'll say Captain America could only be matched by John Powell's X-Men Last Stand.

So, I must be the only one here not happy with Henry Jackman's assignment.

What he said!

. It owes a huge debt to the entire Jason Bourne series and films made therefrom (I about half expected somebody to mention Treadstone)..

dont tell me its a "shaky camera" film????!!

I didn't notice any shaky cam.

Its there, but they dont do it enuf to ruin the film.
Close though
