Oh yeah...I forgot the reason I came back to this thread when I saw PP's post.

That was to update with the information about Quartet's release, which turned out to be a (barely) expanded King Solomon's Mines. Though it only went out of print earlier this year, it is currently fetching high prices on the secondhand market so this was a very worthy reissue, now with Goldsmith's original album arrangement as a bonus and some crossfades removed (and thus, a few seconds of more music).

I'm happy about it but like others somewhat disappointed because they promoted it as being a Goldsmith "expansion" when it's really rather a stretch to describe it that way, at least compared with the previous Prometheus and Intrada issues, both of which featured the complete score.

Still, their new artwork looks great and their booklet will surely be superior since it features John Takis track-by-track liner notes!

I'm still curious to hear what Goldsmith releases this past year people were most thankful for. Ms. Pineapple, have you had a chance to listen to your Goldsmith goodies yet (or at least QB VII)?

I also thought I'd update the thread with the news that Roger at Intrada did confirm a few weeks ago that they had more Goldsmith coming in January:
http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6470

I wonder what this could be? The Ghost and the Darkness? Hopefully an actual expansion this time at least...

I'm still holding out for Leviathan at some point! Especially since they did Deep Rising this past year, another underwater adventure would be a real treat

And it's The River Wild complete coming in a few days, WITH the rejected Jarre score!

At last another TRUE Goldsmith expansion!

The River Wild is here and more complete than could have been expected! It turns out that not only was Jarre's score simply rejected, but before that multiple cues were rejected which he had to re-write and re-record, and then after the job got passed to Jerry, he had to do the exact same thing! We saw a little of that re-working in the behind the scenes session footage of Fred Karlin's documentary on Goldsmith, but I had no idea there was so many alternates recorded by both composers, with the result that both CDs of Intrada's two disc set are packed to the brim! This must've been a big headache of a project for them and I am eternally grateful for them going the extra mile on this release and giving us everything! This release really couldn't be any better:
http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.9198/.f?sc=13&category=22848

Here is what I'd written in the original post:
"The River Wild (RCA --> Sony) -- Given the pattern of releases at LaLaLand, I think this will be one of theirs (and hopefully they'll include Jarre's rejected score). On the other hand I thought LLL would do the similarly Sony-owned Congo and Intrada just put it out so the same might happen with this."

It probably turned out to be Intrada in the end because the film is Universal and while LLL deals with them (ie. Battlestar Galactica to 1941), Intrada has a much stronger and more regular relationship.

Now there are very few 90s scores left that Varese doesn't control in perpetuity, and hopefully we can expect The Ghost and the Darkness and Powder complete from Intrada this year (since the OSTs were released on Disney-owned Hollywood Records, Intrada is the only place to look towards...and there's also a very outside chance they might be allowed to expand Mulan).

It now seems likely that we'll be getting a complete remastered Rambo: First Blood Part II from Intrada at some point in the future. While previously controlled by Silva (as it was for Supergirl and Legend, among other non-Goldsmith scores), Doug recently had the following to say on the Intrada forum:

"It is no longer controlled by Silva." -- with a smiley face, no less!

http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6475&start=15

(scroll to the bottom post of that page)

I suspect Doug has been working on it for a while since in the liner notes for the recent Intrada MAF reissue of the complete First Blood, we were teased with a description of the original orchestral end credits Goldsmith recorded (but which was not included on Silva's expanded release). I'm ecstatic that we will finally get to hear it, as well as the rest of the score in probably much superior sound quality. It's also great that definitive versions of all three Goldsmith Rambo scores will now be out from the same label (cuz I'm anal and like my spines to line up!)

Today seems like a very good day to restart this post... right Yavar?? wink

Personally, I'm excited just by the thought of a *possible* Complete Ghost & Darkness from Intrada, even if nobody has confirmed anything yet...

I'm 100% certain that Intrada will put out The Ghost and the Darkness complete. They already did Deep Rising which was also a Hollywood Records album so we know now that those can be expanded, and Doug specifically said G&tD was on Intrada's radar. It's just possibly a question of whether we'll see it *this* year, but it does seem very likely.

I wonder what unreleased music LLL might put out this year...their 90s options have dwindled considerably but maybe there are some earlier scores they can tackle.

This one's a bit of a surprise: apparently Varese's release of Magic was not complete. LLL is putting out a new version this month with at least one more cue. I'm excited to see a track list and find out if there are any other unreleased cues (or alternates) that they've included!

Here's the post I just made in the new Warlock thread in celebration of the beautiful new Intrada release: "With their talk of an imminent expanded 2-CD Disney 90s property, I've been thinking that a complete Ghost and the Darkness was going to be the next Goldsmith score released by Intrada. I'm super surprised and excited to see this complete and remastered Warlock first! A very underrated score which I think quite a few people will be thoroughly reassessing now..."

I had previously written in the main post here, "Warlock (Intrada) -- not sure how much more score there is but I would guess Intrada would eventually get around to reissuing this...they did Rent-A-Cop complete, after all!"

Despite the dismissive tone there I actually think Warlock is an excellent score, much better than Rent-A-Cop, and I didn't realize almost 20 minutes were missing from it...nor did I realize just how much better it could sound! Also: JEFF BOND liner notes! Woohoo!

Yavar

P.S. I'm a little sad to see there weren't any extra alternates or anything to be added to Magic. I'm so torn about whether to re-buy it when I have the Varese and am happy with it. I'm sure the LLL has a nicer booklet but it's just one 25 second track...gaaaah my Goldsmith completism! If only there were Jeff Bond liners it'd make it easier to get it....

Well, it's once more time to update this thread as the long-expected complete release of The Ghost and the Darkness has just been put out by Intrada!

http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=109573&forumID=1&archive=0

This was probably the 90s score most in need of expansion aside from those held by Varese in perpetuity. So glad Intrada has done it! What a bounty of Goldsmith we've had so far this year...

I would be remiss if I did not also mention that the new Tadlow recording of The Blue Max has been officially announced by James Fitzpatrick. We also know that there will be newly-recorded suites from Inchon (in dire need of a good-sounding recording to make the case for this underrated score) and MacArthur (possibly including some previously-unreleased music?), and possibly one other title as James had previously indicated.

The original recording of Goldsmith's shortest score has just been released! Shorter than The Artist Who Did Not Want to Paint. Shorter than Soarin' Over California. Shorter even than the single minute-long cue he contributed to The Flaming Star (http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=106527&forumID=1&archive=0 ).

Yes, I am of course referring to his original score to the Judge Dredd trailer! It had previously been legally released as a re-recording conducted by Joel McNeely on a Varese album, and later BSX supplied a John Beal-produced version. This is the first time Goldsmith's glorious 47 second original recording has been legally released, as a bonus with Intrada's complete release of Alan Silvestri's score to the final film:
http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.9616/.f?sc=13&category=-113

Does anyone know how many other times Goldsmith composed and recorded original trailer music? I know about his original score for the trailer to Rambo: First Blood Part II, because Intrada similarly included it as a generous bonus on their complete release of First Blood. So besides these two times, how many others?

Extreme Prejudice! The original LP, plus all subsequent releases, have included the trailer cue. I believe Under Fire also had an original trailer cue, but I'm not sure.

According to JGOnline:

Oh yeah -- I forgot Extreme Prejudice (a Goldsmith score I hardly ever listen to, I'm afraid) and apparently so did JGOnline! So adding it to the three they list (has Basic Instinct's trailer score been released?) that makes four total. Good to know.

Updated the original post to remove Gremlins 2 from the Varese in-perpetuity list, because they have just announced a complete release, shipping in a week!

https://www.varesesarabande.com/products/gremlins-2-the-deluxe-edition

Amazing news -- let's hope they move on to other Goldsmith 90s titles they control (plus The Other and The Flints, of course).

I'm pleased to bump this again so soon after the last bump. I had written,

"The Trouble With Angels -- Hope one of our labels isn't turned off by the Harkit release and tackles this little gem. The existing album is from the LP program which was either in whole or in large part a re-recording -- this could certainly use remastering as well, and would hopefully be paired with a complete release of the original film recording."

Well, as with Sebastian, Intrada wasn't scared off by the Harkit release. I could have sworn I'd read that the LP of this was a re-recording (as was Stagecoach, which it was previously paired with on Mainstream's CD) but perhaps it's more of a situation like Sebastian, where the album had a unique track or two, or unique sweeteners. Can anyone expand further? I guess I'll also inquire at the Intrada board. Anyway, their new release seems like the best that could be hoped for on this score. Intrada has been having an amazing year overall, and with Goldsmith in particular: The River Wild, Warlock, The Ghost and the Darkness, the original recording of his Judge Dredd trailer cue, and now this! Add that to Varese's recent deluxe Gremlins 2 and LLL's complete (though only expanded by 1 27-second track) Magic, and Goldsmith fans have been having a great year!

Intrada's recent release of the complete mono score to The Trouble With Angels brings up the question: If some elements for the complete score survived for this 1966 Columbia picture, is there any chance that some elements for the original recording of Face of a Fugitive (also a Columbia picture) survive from 7 years before?

Black Patch I'm 99.9% sure is lost and requires a re-recording, but I'm having a little doubt about Face of a Fugitive now...

One really has nothing to do with the other. Is there any chance? Sure, why not? I have no information one way or the other. But in general (yes, there are exceptions), individual productions and production entities would likely have had some autonomy regarding how elements like this were stored.

They would, of course, be required to deliver a final negative for the American release plus some sort of music-and-effects only soundtrack along with a print of the film without titles for foreign distribution. (And before anybody calls me on any of this, yes, I'm simplifying.) Even if there were a policy from on-high within the studio about how items they anticipated no further use for (such as recording sessions) were to be stored, many executives would most likely have changed over the seven years between these two films, and with them, the policies.

None of which is to say anything does or does not exist. Just that one is not potential evidence of another. We've seen it before, many times. Something from Studio X exists in pristine condition, another from around the same time is lost to the ages.
