One of my fave albums is the "Concert Legrand" (the one with the running shoes on the cover) that has some tracks not available elsewhere (correct me if I'm wrong).
What makes this a beautiful album are tracks #4 "Wonder where I'll be tomorrow" from 'Sheila Levine...', #5 & 8 from the film 'Cage without a Key', track #9 "Fickle Fingers" (a nice jazz piece), and track #10 "Petite musique d'amour".
It's easy to overlook a lot of these hidden gems while enjoying many of his top 10 album/film scores.
This is the album that is great to get a non fan turned on to his other scores.
I would classify a beautiful soundtrack as one that you could play at a dinner party as background music, that there would be no changes in the general mood of the score that would cause a guest to question your choice. In that respect, quite a few John Barry scores would be beautiful soundtracks from start to finish, as would THE JOY LUCK CLUB. A lot of the scores listed here, whilst having beautiful tracks, are not beautiful from start to finish. If you were lucky, your dinner party guest might ask what the music is, and could they get a copy!
Sure, good point, some scores will play the main beautiful score often through the film with cues in between that would not be defined as beautiful; Then there are scores which for the most part are beautiful [the blue lagoon-80-for one] but even these scores will have segments that are not define as beautiful. It wouldn't be good film scoring if it were. Unless you have a film where there is absolutely no conflict, now that would be rare. Then you have scores where the main theme or themes are played only once or twice and the rest of the score would not be considered beautiful[Friday the 13th, point in hand]. I have listed a combo of all, so maybe the thread title should be BEAUTIFUL SOUNDTRACKS AND THEMES or BEAUTIFUL THEMES AND SOUNDTRACKS. thanks for your interest.I may very well take your advice, I often do when the advice is GOOD.
I Remember 2 beautiful soundtracks THE BLUE LAGOON AND SOMEWHERE IN TIME where non film music listeners did enjoy the scores for the most part. However during some pieces they were shall we say getting ants in their pants.
DAY OF THE LOCUST-74- JOHN BARRY- Very pretty love theme in typical Barry's style- PAUL WILLIAMS on one of his lp's did a vocal rendition of this nice melody, it was called LONELY HEARTS.
