I think this release highlights two things. First, that Basil Poledouris put together a stunning 48 minute LP programme back at the time of the films' original release. Second, Varese added about 20 minutes of great 'missing' music to give us an excellent expanded edition. This is by far the least enjoyable format to hear this score! From the endless percussion and drum cues, the several source cues that break up the whole symphonic sound and the additional - and for the most part lesser - versions of previously heard music, it's just too cluttered and bitty to enjoy. The sound is improved in many instances, but as already mentioned aboved, some of the drum and percussion sound levels are ridiculous. Add to all this the chanting of 'bony farty' during one track and I can see why having every second of music from a score isn't always a great thing. The packaging is nice and the booklet and notes make for good reading, but I will hardly ever return to this version if I want to hear the magnificence of CONAN. I hope their forthcoming CONAN THE DESTROYER release is less redundant to me.

My album version constructed from the Intrada "complete score': 1) Prologue/Anvil of Crom 2) Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom 3) Gift of Fury 4) Column of Sadness/Wheel of Pain 7) Theology/Civilization 17) Battle of the Mounds Part 1 16) Funeral Pyre 18) Battle of the Mounds Part 2 21) Orphans of Doom/The Awakening 15) The Kitchen/The Orgy total time : app 44 minutes Basil's album version: 01.Anvil Of Crom 2:35 02. Riddle Of Steel/Riders Of Doom 5:38 03. Gift Of Fury 3:51 04. Wheel Of Pain 4:10 05. Atlantean Sword 3:51 06. Theology/Civilization 3:14 07. Wifeing (Theme Of Love From "Conan The Barbarian") 2:11 08. The Search 3:09 09. The Orgy 4:16 10. Funeral Pyre 4:30 11. Battle Of The Mounds 4:54 12. Orphans Of Doom/The Awakening 5:32 Total Album Time: 48:17 this sequence really makes the score into a tone poem/ oratorio/ choral symphony! bruce

It should only be 2cds! If you're talking about your own preference for how the set should have been produced, fair enough. If you're talking about what should be in the package when he opens it up, that number should be 3. RETWEET!

Yeah, that's another gripe! Tracks running into each other creating 20-30 minute blocks of music! It's The Battle Of Hoth all over again. It's fine if it was recorded that way, but it wasn't. I cannot see the harm in placing a short - 1 second - pause between tracks to break things up. But over at Intrada, they have already mentioned thay love albums like the horrendous ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN, with it's 3-5 cues knitted together, so this practice will continue, I fear

Also why did "War Paint" cross-fade into "The Kitchen/The Orgy when they are presented as two separate cues? No good reason I can see or hear, apart from Mr. Fake wanting to fiddle around on his computer one night and pretend he's an arranger. The two pieces don't sound related and the segue sounds amateurish. Horrible. I haven't heard this one, but there's a horrible crossfade on Young Guns II that is completely jarring and un-musical in the "Lynch Mob" cue. The rousing action cue that ends with a statement of the theme is crudely crossfaded with one of the goofy comic-sounding cues. LLL's Bodyguard album did something similar with "Followed/On The Job," where the tempos don't lend themselves well to the cues being merged the way they were.

Another example of lame edition can be found on the new Intrada 3CD album of "Conan, The Barbarian". Why, in Crom's name, they merged the tracks "The Three of Woo" with "The Recovery"? Those tracks has nothing to do with each other and were composed for scenes that aren't even close! Why? Why? WHY????

The album is indeed great, but that glued cues were unecessary. YOR loves "The Recovery", but now cannot listen to it without "The Three of Woe". Total nonsense edition!
