OK, I know I'm just stirring the shit here, but.... here's to stirring the shit!
Ridley Scott (AKA, that great modern filmmaker) recently gave an interview with Empire magazine and said that there's a script for PROMETHEUS 2 and.... well, that's about all he said about that. He's got two "huge" pictures lined up on his schedule, and the speculation is that if he is indeed going to be the director of PROMETHEUS 2, it wouldn't happen until 2016 or even more likely 2017.
I think many here might remember that I'm no fan of PROMETHEUS, to put it lighty, and that I'm no fan of Ridley Scott in general, though I do like a few of his movies, so I still say... THERE WILL BE NO SEQUEL TO PROMETHEUS!
Why? That a script has been written means nothing. Lots of scripts are written, but very few ever go into production. In fact, a script going into production is like any one of us winning the lottery -- a many millions to one shot. Ridley Scott has an interest in keeping the prospect of a PROMETHEUS 2 alive, because, just like a politician with his electoral base, Scott has his fan base. They both pander to their base. There's many, many ALIEN geeks out there that just can't get enough of all things ALIEN. More power to them, I couldn't care less, but even those that long for this sequel to come into being concede that it's most likely Scott will only executive produce and hand the directing duties to someone else. That's a possibility, but let me know when there's an announcement of an actual production start. That's when I'll start to believe it.

That's okay because the director never slows down?!!!! What kind of an idiot, sickening fan-boy statement is that? That's like me saying, "My last shit was a real stinker, but that's okay because my bowel movements never slow down."

On what possible measurement did Prometheus "tank" at the box office?
Bring on the sequel....
I wrote the above quickly (because I had to run out for something) and I forgot to add why I think there won't be a sequel.
PROMETHEUS did not "tank" at the box office, in fact it did very well -- but so do a lot of lousy movies. PROMETHEUS did tank with the critics, the majority of critics. I think it also tanked with the majority of film goers. (No, I haven't checked its rating at Rotten Tomatoes.) Just because a movie does very well at the box office doesn't mean that everyone walked out happy about what they saw. There was a lot of studio build up for PROMETHEUS and a lot of fan-boy excitement about it, but I contend that the film disappointed more than it pleased most people. In a very short time, at least by 2016 or 2017, PROMETHEUS will be a distant memory, a movie some might catch on cable or satellite or notice the box on the video shelf with a nice layer of dust on it. I notice now at my local video store that most copies of PROMETHEUS are gone -- that's when I'm bothering to notice at all, of course. I think it's fading away fast and I think the executives at Fox are probably forgetting about it pretty quickly too, though I seriously would never underestimate their taste and crassness.
As box office, PROMETHEUS may have been boffo (and everyone does know that Fox was still disappointed with its performance, right? You do know that?), but as art -- you know, that thing that makes movies really important as apposed to how well they sell -- as art... PROMETHEUS was a turd.
So, again, I say {i}THERE WILL BE NO SEQUEL.

PROMETHEUS was a turd," I happen to have enjoyed the film and bought it on Blu-ray and some of the soundtrack cues online, as well as the big picture book about the making of it, and find it hard NOT to watch it when I come across it on HD cable, plus I wrote what I personally thought was an interesting outline for a sequel, although it was essentially ignored. But, forgive me, this really was posted on the wrong board.

Oh, please forgive me for posting it on the wrong side. How terribly stupid of me. I honestly didn't -- and still don't -- see what difference it makes, especially since all you have to do is ignore it (Right, Sheetmusicman?).
As for you enjoying PROMETHEUS.... I'm not attacking anyone for liking the movie. Let's just get that straight. If you liked it, wonderful! We're each entitled to our own tastes -- and to our own opinions. I have given this movie a fair shake (for me, anyway). I saw it in the theatre and I tried watching it again on HBO, but gave up after 40 minutes because I was sooooo bored by it. I just don't see what's good about this movie -- BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M POSTING FOR.
I'm posting -- and since movies usually have scores, then it's kind of related to the subject of this board -- on what I see as the continual idiocy of most everyone here and elsewhere wishing for, getting excited about, and even demanding sequels! Sequels! Sequels! Sequels! It's retarded.
Oh, and as to the score.... I'm hard pressed to recall any of it. It was kind of like elevator music; I knew it was there, but otherwise it made little impression -- except when it quoted Goldsmith. THAT I NOTICED! In fact, I've have probably liked the movie if Scott had only done what he first did with ALIEN years ago, just temp track the entire thing, only in this case with Fox Goldsmith scores, especially PLANET OF THE APES.
There, I just related this thread to film music. Problem solved!
