I first knew him from that Star Trek episode, but my most vivid memory of him is the Bette Davis episode of This Is Your Life, where it came out that Davis had helped him get film work after he did time in prison for drug charges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Robinson

I had to play the part of a King in some adaptation or another when I was a kid, and having seen Jay Robinson on TV in The Robe, I completely stole his schtik for my performance, and lightning stroke twice, for I too, stole the show. He was awesome. Everything I had ever learned about acting, up to that point in my life, I learned by watching Jay Robinson (and Laughton).

It was Jay's portrayal of Caligula that first got me interested in finding out more about the 'real' Caligula. I remember his evil tirade at the end of 'The Robe' (repeated at the opening of 'Demetrius'): 'Then Christians die you shall, go, both of you, into your Kingdom!' I also enjoy the scene in 'Demetrius' when he is questioning Claudius about Jesus. At one point his dagger scabbard gets knocked out of place and he tries to replace it while carrying on with his lines. Thank you for entertaining us, Jay, RIP. David

His Caligula was one of the most fabulous, over-the-top, show-stealing portrayals I've seen in cinema. A great actor, I barely recognized him in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992 when he played as Mr. Hawkins for less than 60 seconds and still stole the scene from Keanu Revves. RIP
