Given how marvelous his metaphysical music was accentuating and enhancing the original series, whom would you suggest - cinematically-classically or another memorable blend of both - take up the galactic inter-planetary baton for the sequel due to be unveiled before an acutely-anticipating public next year?
Was there any original music for the series ? The Cosmos "theme" was tracked Vangelis, and the rest of the music was a collection of licensed tracks - lots of other Vangelis, but also Edgar Froese, Tomita, classical, blues...
Overall the music worked very well and was pretty eclectic. I wouldn't mind another needle drop score .

Interesting enough by tracking existing works, Cosmos was also a celebration of music. Edit: Based on Copernicus' Star, Abel Korzeniowski would be fracking awesome.
I believe PBS only got away with tracking all that wonderful music because they didn't have to pay royalties to anyone. Something to do with PBS being a public service broadcaster? Fox/National Geographic would never be able to afford it. I think it would be important to use the original main theme from Heaven & Hell, and I'm certain Vangelis would be agreeable to it as he loved the original series. Without that main theme it just wouldn't be Cosmos.
In any case, if they go with an original score, I hope they go with someone new, give it an original, different sound to what we would expect. I'd hate it to have a Hans Zimmer/Media Ventures sound, that would be horrible. Here's hoping they do something bold.
The trailer looks interesting, but all those animation sequences are worrying.
Basically the way this thing happened, apparently, was that Tyson and Druyan bumped into Seth MacFarlane, who was enthusiastic about the project and managed to sell Fox on it.
From the above link: “It’s worth noting, too, like the original series part of the story is how we came to know a lot of the things we know,” he continued. “The original did historical recreations using live action. In this incarnation of Cosmos, and largely thanks to Seth MacFarlane’s involvement, we’re doing them as animated sequences.”

I'd also be cool with another needle drop score, but after hearing Bear McCreary's EUROPA REPORT, I could see him doing it if a new music approach was chosen this time out.
My buddy Charles would also be a great choice given the music he has written and performed and his personal affinity for the subject matter. Ad astra CHARLES!
I certainly loved the original Cosmos music selections and it was what introduced me to Vangelis as a kid. In the update, I think that the ComicCon commercial makes nice use of music from "Sunshine" and "Kick-Ass". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeVCR1qfMaU I wouldn't mind hearing more music of that sort used in the series.
It occurred to me just a little while ago that I would love for Larry Fast to get a crack at it.
While I'm at it, why not David Paich? (Everyone knows he can produce pieces strongly reminiscent of Shostakovich's 11th, and the 11th was used to GREAT effect in the show.)
