I saw Only God Forgives this weekend and it has a great Cliff Martinez score and use of music by the delightfully insane Nicolas Winding Refn.

Check out this Q&A with Refn at Slate where he singles out a Morricone cue as his favorite of all-time:

Did you like this film?

I found it horrible. So well made in all regards except for story and instead of having one silent lead we have two of them and nothing about either makes you care or connect.

I still have a few more hours on the rental...I might watch it again only to hear the score which didn't make much of an impact on me.

Yes, I did like this film and score. I liked its mood, beauty, juxtaposition of cultures, and a character who is sure to be the next big Halloween costume for drag queens.

If you hated it, I see nothing wrong with us having different opinions. Don't watch it again just because someone else said he liked it!

For me, I hated the movie so much that I Liked it. I found it to be a unique laugh fest, really now what was Refn thinking??

The score is sensational. For much of its duration, Martinez has basically treated the film as a horror film and his sometimes startling music reflects that in a provocative, attention-grabbing way that I really enjoyed.

I enjoyed the film tremendously, wincing at times. Interesting moral plays throughout, the characters were believable. Now looking forward to Cliff Martinez's work to reconnect and enjoy the atmosphere. Thanks for the article.

So this is neo-noir?

For me I will have to watch it again because my opinion of it is still undetermined lol, I recently discussed it again with friends and it did leave an impact; I seem to read a lot that everyone thinks it's shot beautifully but the story is lacking; I found most of it (dialogue, editing, lighting, shots) very reminiscent of David Lynch and to me it was like Lynch in Thailand. There is a sense of justice to the violence but also a feeling of predetermined faith. The characters are very one dimensional (the mother felt like sitcom material) and their immoral and cold behavior hard to identify with (though that is done very intentionally I feel). A lot of the time I found myself just staring at this film rather than experiencing it but there were moments where it did seem to take off. The score by Martinez is good when it is present, especially that fight cue, and in retrospect for me the best thing about the movie, or the only element of it I took an immediate liking to.

This!

Maybe if I saw this on the big screen I would have been more taken with it but instead I saw it on my HD 50+ screen...

That was a great read. Refn's movies are so great and the music matches them so well. ONLY GOD FORGIVES is incredible.

I just checked that cue out on Spotify thanks to your recommendation. It is freaking awesome! Especially that use of pipe organ.

This is a great soundtrack which I've been listening to since getting the UK release. I'd love to hear the additional tracks on the US iTunes "deluxe" release. Anyone have any thoughts on these tracks?

P.S. "Bride of Chang" and "Wanna Fight" are glorious beyond words. Martinez is a king of music.

I don't think we have private messaging to illegally share files that you could easily buy from iTunes.

I do however think that because myself and nuts_score are friends on Facebook he knows exactly what I mean by my comments Mr. Rutherford but thank you kindly for implication of illegally sharing music being no bueno and that iTunes is a valid source of purchase [although I prefer AmazonMp3 personally].

I also prefer Amazon. I read his original post about wondering what the tracks sounded like and assumed at first that he was out of the country, which it turns out he is not. He has Spotify and iTunes easily available to him, just seemed weird to spend the time to type his message out when he could be listening to the tracks instead.

During the time between my first post up there and this response I did hop onto Spotify to hear the additional tracks. I was just hoping to incite discussion about what the content included, when I had not heard it yet. I don't always have an additional tab open with Spotify.

Neither do I! But it looks like you did the right thing eventually!

For me, the whole album could have been music from The Master Musicians Of Jajouka, and I still would've bought it, so long as it included that "Wanna Fight" cue at the end.

Though I'm actually a fan of the Master Musicians (blame Howard Shore) this was a good laugh. "Wanna Fight" is beyond cool, and I'm also a huge fan of the music Martinez provides for Vithaya Pansringarm's character (who I am to understand from friends who've seen the film is the true protagonist of the story). "Bride of Chang" is just too cool for words to me, it's the one I listen to the most (and then "Wanna Fight" after that).

Ever since I hit on "Wanna Fight" I haven't even listened to the rest of it again! It sounded like Penderecki a bit from what I remember, which is pretty cool.
