M. Desplat is scoring Clooney's next directorial effort THE MONUMENTS MEN. Sounds like a good project with a great cast. I think Clooney's a fine actor and am always more pleased to hear about a new film project of his than about his latest political shenanigans. Now it's two Desplat scores for 2013 so far (and just like last year, we'll be hearing a lot of new proyects). Zulu (from the director of Largo Winch) and this one. Archibald   (Member) Is this a story about the U.S. Army personnel who discovered almost mountainous accumulations of artwork masterpieces, hidden away by the Nazis, and who then spent much time and energy to restore them to museums, etc.? Fascinating idea for a film, though there is already a documentary about it. I suppose Clooney's film will tack on some kind of through-line narrative... and, of course, a love interest. Ides of March generic? With the 70's vibe and that unusual main theme? Please. Desplat is everything but generic. The song is there to cue people that the film, while a period piece, has a modern sensibility. Period pieces are seen by the industry, sadly, as uncommercial, so they're trying to give the film the appearance of being somewhat modern. However people won't find modern music in the film itself, a la The Great Gatsby. At least I hope not... Also, I'll bet anything that the eventual overseas trailers will not need to use modern pop music like this. Only US audiences seem to require this. Anybody who sees this explicitly period trailer that references World War II and Hitler repeatedly and thinks it takes place today is surely too stupid to successfully purchase a movie ticket. I also think it's being ridiculously literal to demand that the music for a trailer (or a film) be absolutely true to its period. The music is part of the filmmaking, it exists outside the awareness of the characters depicted. Certainly, no music at the time of ancient Rome sounded remotely like the score to "Ben-Hur." Films can be old fashioned whether they take place in the year 1900 or 2900. A film can be modern regardless of what period is depicted. What you are objecting to is a perceived cynicism on the part of the studio. Perceive that if you like. Perceive that if you like. I happen to think the trailer works. I don't just perceive it, it's there in the industry. Trust me. I had been a huge fan of his work until the last two years when I got the feeling that he is just doing too much, therefore repeating himself ad nauseam. What is exactly is Desplat repeating? The last two years have been great in terms of Desplat music! Rise of the Guardians, Zero Dark Thirty, the two Harry Potters, and many more! Desplat just keeps getting better and better! What other composer uses almost exclusively the LSO?
