Bong Joon-ho’s

Director Bong Joon-ho left for the Czech Republic on Oct. 13 to prepare for the production of his latest project. is based on a French graphic novel and is set in the future where many people have died of extreme cold weather created by climate change. Survivors get on a train called the Snowpiercer, equipped with food and water, but as necessities start to run out, the train becomes a lawless place where anything goes. Park Chan-wook is attached as a producer and its budget is known to be some KW40 billion (US$35.3 million) with over 80% of its cast planned to be from English-speaking countries. It’s mostly about what happens on the train and the plot is said to be brimming with non-stop action moving forward in the train.

It’s a multi-national co-production between Korea’s Moho Film and film companies from France and the U.S. amongst others.About 90% of the shooting will take place on the set of a train, making it necessary to have a large-scale set. Moreover, the train set has to be some 80 to 90 meters long, which means that filming in Korea would be a virtual impossibility. Bong says, “We ultimately had two choices, the Czech Republic and Hungary. After thinking long and hard, we decided to go for the Barrandov Studios near Prague in the Czech Republic as the country has a long tradition of filmmaking and plenty of skilled film crews.” Barrandov Studiosis famous for being the set of and more recently, it was where was shot.

A producer already went to the Czech Republic in September to start negotiations, and a local production office opened on the 17th. The make-up of the staff and crew will be as diverse as the multi-national financing: Korea’s Hong Kyeong-pyo will be in charge of the cinematography, computer graphics will be supervised by an American, production design will be done by a Czech, and costume design will be done by someone from the U.K. Since a great number of the actors will be Englishspeakers, a casting director is meticulously searching through Hollywood.

With such a multi-national crew, meetings were always conducted via video conferencing. Bong says, “After video conference meetings with me in Korea, the producerin the Czech Republic, the C.G.I. supervisorin Los Angeles and the special effects director in Germany, held over different time zones with a wild mix of Korean and German accents, I would get completely exhausted.”

looks set to be an action thriller with the train as the centerpiece. The core of the film is what happens in this space that runs back to front, a long connected and straight line. Bong says, “When I was filming , I wanted in a way to makesuch a definitive film set around the Han River that other directors wouldn’t be able to shoot there again. (laughs)With , I’m working with the mindset that ‘there will be no more train films’.” In other words, Bong is hoping to make the definitive train film to end all films set on trains including those made in the past and possibly in the future.

About Korean actor SONG Kang-ho, who is set to appear in the film, Bong says, “He isn’t one of the lead actors, but he’ll play a very attractive character like Han Solo in.”
aims to start shooting around March next year fora release before the end of 2012.

Just heard the completed score for Snowpiercer and it is fantastic. It is very distinctive, original, and fresh. Lots of Beltrami's (and Buck Sanders') trademark unusual, unearthly and brilliant sound design, but also contains some powerful and epic orchestral writing. Some of the score reminds me of past Beltrami works The Thing, Hellboy, and Knowing. It's got its quirks that will make you raise an eyebrow and smile, but it also has some epic sci-fi orchestral writing, echoing such previous masterpiece cues as "Caleb Leaves" and "Shock and Aww" (from Knowing) and the more grand finale cues of The Thing. Yes, parts of Snowpiercer also achieve those powerful symphonic heights, and it still manages to incorporate Hurt Locker-style electronic ingenuity. Snowpiercer is quite dark but still retains a wink to the music, a devious playfulness, a la Hellboy. There is also lots of interesting piano work, with a few piano solo cues that almost feel Russian somehow. Snowpiercer also includes some great themes and motifs that play out throughout the score and even some rousing, almost western-sounding cues with prominent snare drum percussion.

Included references to previous Beltrami scores above to give people a point of comparison, but I hasten to add once again that Snowpiercer is a strongly unique work from the composer.

I am looking forward to it (and Carrie, and WWZ, and The Wolverine, and the new Tommy Lee Jones flick -- this could really be a heck of a year for Beltrami (and Sanders)!), but without having heard it there's not really much to discuss!

Tell that to the Man of Steel thread! wink

I was hoping that my review/description of the score above would drum up some excitement as I know people really dig Beltrami's sci-fi epic Knowing/Hellboy type theatrics, which this one presents on its own terms.

I feel like this film and score are most likely destined for under-the-radar status and I don't want anyone to miss out on this awesome score, whether via viewing the film or (hopefully) through a score release.

Very much looking forward to this score! And I agree that this year is turning into Beltrami's most exciting one so far! I look forward to seeing a trailer too, at the moment I can't imagine what this film will be like at all, especially with the talent involved.

I don't think so. The film is from the makers of The Host and Oldboy. Park Chan-wook's American debut with Stoker had great reviews.

DeputyRiley, you sold me with the comparisons to Knowing and Hellboy and the "unique" orchestral powerhouse tracks! I'm finding there's an unexpected bonanza of Beltrami and Sanders' scores this year so it's good to know which ones I need to keep a close watch on.

Track title: "This is the Beginning"

Its thrilling brilliance speaks for itself. smile

Snowpiercer is tied with Soul Surfer as the best score I've heard from Beltrami in the past 5 years!

Sounds wonderful! As does the world war z sample in the other thread. With these, carrie and the wolverine all still to come in 2013 I'd say Beltrami's is going to have a tough time topping the year he's had!

Ah, Beltrami and his love for irregular meters (7/8, in this case). Good stuff.

Umm, wow! I knew there was a reason Beltrami has been one of my favorite composers since I began this obsession over 15 years ago! Snowpiercer cannot come soon enough!
