I'm remembering things like the bonus stuff that came with the STAR WARS double LP - track sheet, colour painting poster.
CE3K - 7' inch single version of the main theme.
TESB - stapled colour booklet of movie stills within the LP fold-out.
STAR TREK - TMP - colour poster of the new Enterprise and the dust jacket had colour stills and all the aliens.
What do you recall?

Pops, ticks, scratches, sludge, dirt, off-center pressings, inner-groove distortion, pre- and post-echo, warping, limited dynamics, repeated trips to exchange defective discs . . .

I always loved the poster that came with Star Wars and all the great pictures and liner notes for The Empire Strikes Back. I still have my dads copies, and it's such a nostalgia kick to go over them while giving the records a spin.

I love my CDs, but I grew up with vinyl records, so they're very special to me and I still enjoy giving them a listen when I have the time. I need to go back to Sacramento soon to hit up the record shops. Always manage to dig up some nice finds. smile

LOL

God I remember having to take my Star Trek II LP back to the store 3 times because every copy I tried skipped at one particular point in the Main Title - it was a crescendo about 2 minutes into the track. Every copy they tested in the store jumped too! Eventually I had to stick blu-tac onto the stylus to keep the thing from jumping off!

I agree though, the presentation was often divine! I miss laserdiscs for the same reason - very, very poor quality compared to DVD, and even worse compared to blu-ray, but some of those sets... wow. I still have about 50 just because they're so nice to look at!

I'm remembering that without some LP's in my collection, I would never be able to hear the soundtrack music at all. Soundtracks such as The Diary of Anne Frank and The Pleasure Seekers will probably never see the light of day on CD. We can ask and ask and ask the manufacturers, but they ignore requests. So be it. There are always LP's to fill the gap.

LP's were wonderful for huge and lovely artwork. I sometimes buy them only for the artwork. There´s just more space for it. The same was valid for Laserdisc. A friend of mine had a nice bunch of special editions from Disney made for the market in the States. Lovely, lovely design! Here in Germany we only got and get editions mainly aimed at kids... boring in comparison.

But ultimately the content is what counts and that is were LP's sucked - and still suck - so badly. I hate the constant noise, pops, crackle, problems so much... for years I asked myself if my turntable was badly aligned. So finally I bought a new system for the tonearm, cleaned all the parts, configured it perfectly (to utter perfection mind you). It was better but still not good enough, even with new LP's. Some pops and crackles still prevail, even if I clean the LP's thoroughly. For me the LP's is dead for quite some time now. There really are no advantages to digital systems.

I wrote an article about that here if you´re interested:

Pops, ticks, scratches, sludge, dirt, off-center pressings, inner-groove distortion, pre- and post-echo, warping, limited dynamics, repeated trips to exchange defective discs . . .

For me these were the great exception to the rule. Warmer sound, of course.

But the hiss, pops, tics, etc., were integral to the experience when that is all we had.

Holding those albums...smelling the new on some of them...the age on others...and manically trying to keep the dust off them made it all worthwhile.

Yeah when you slid out the LP from my first copy of The Good the Bad and The Ugly after the record came desert dust, a hanging rope and about 200,000 dollars in gold coins. And the cover had a little mini-sized sheepskin waistcoat that wrapped around it.

You just dont get those kind of feel-a-round extras with CDs these days!!

Kinda curious Bill, mine didn't have the sheepskin waistcoat, do you know if it's possible to pick up a second hand copy complete with waistcoat somewhere?

All those shops are gone now! You'll be lucky.

However, my Wild Bunch LP came with a bag of silver washers and a machine gun tripod.

Remember LPs? I buy more LPs than CDs. I prefer analog over digital, although I love the convenience of CDs.

But the hiss, pops, tics, etc., were integral to the experience when that is all we had.

And lets not forget that CDs can also get scratches, amass dirt and a few have become unplayable from "CD rot" (something that never afflicted LPs). Heck, some of our CDs were mastered from LPs!

I loved the Varese Sarabande and Intrada LPs from the 80s, with their glossy covers (even major labels didn't spring for that), handsome, colorful artwork and copious stills on the back cover. They were almost like souvenir programs. Some LP releases even came with posters, like Star Trek: The Motion Picture, King Kong, The Deep (The Deep was also pressed on transparent blue vinyl -- how cool is that?).

Someday when I get around to it I'm going to mount my favorite LP sleeves on the wall.

Lp's. In an alternate universe where lp's reign supreme, I can count my soundtrack collection with both hands. As a child I bought few soundtracks because I hated lp's. I hated te need to keep clean, change needles, the warping, and the size. Though I agree with all on the amazing artwork and gimmicks like the booklet etc with planet of the apes. Cassette were okay but hard to do anything except play in order. When I bought my first cd player and the inernet was born(awareness of what's out there) my soundtrack collection exploded.

I just love the cover art. Half the time that's what I use on the ipod instead of the newfangled CD cover. On occasion I either have no choice, or the only difference is that the Intrada logo is on it.

The SUPERMAN double-LP set was a gem, wasn't it? My other favorite LPs were CARRIE, the James Bond series, SILENT RUNNING, and the STAR TREK movies.

I had a turntable with a cassette recorder built in, and I used to extend the life of my LPs by taping them and just playing the cassettes. Good times.
