If the suite on the 'John Barry - 40 Years of Film Music' compilation is a fair representation of the score, then I would very much like for it to be released. Naturally, my preference would be for the full score, but if the LP program is all that survives, I'd be happy with that.
THE DOVE is one of my favourite John Barry albums. The light and attractive melody heard during the opening track, accompanied by two acoustic guitars, is great. “Sail the Summer Winds” is a pleasant saccharine vocal. I find that the album works well as background music or being actively listened to. There is something about it that seems to generate a positive response from non-film score listeners too. Perhaps it is the wide-open sea feel, perhaps it is the variation between the cues, I’m not sure.
If I recall correctly, there don’t seem to be any trombones or trumpets in the score -- only french horns. This reminds me that the horns hold their last note for quite some time at the conclusion of “Here There Be Dragons.”
Alex, I'm not kidding mate, you need to stop with these Barry hero worship threads. If you're not careful you're gonna start alienating folks here, and your obsession may turn other people OFF Barry's music which, I'm sure, is the last thing you want!

Ahh, that must be why so many people suddenly hate Goldsmith...
Alex - you carry on. This kind of sequence is long overdue. And The Dove is great - a little too breezy for my tastes (although there's a delicious darkness in a few tracks) but I'm sure a CD release would be snapped up in no time.
I had no intention of seeing the film - as a 16/17 yr old on its release, was I going to see a "soppy" film about a boy sailing around the world? No way.
I managed to get a pristine copy of the import vinyl LP (or as best as ABC ever released, probably) two years later. I'd heard the Sail The Summer winds theme on his Play It Again album but this John Barry score had eluded me until then.
If ever a score made me want to see a film it was this one and happily, in those pre home video days, films would often come around a second or third time before going on TV (after 5 yrs in the UK) and I was in luck.
For 30+ years The Dove has been one of my favourite films. It may not be in the top 5 now but I still rate it highly.
I'm longing for a high-quality CD release (the earlier Artemis release is mediocre quality only) and a DVD release, too.
Incidentally, the album covered most of the music score in the film and was presented mostly in sequence - I can't think of any notable omission. Also, whilst I'm pleased the Silva Screen re-recordings exist, the suite does not compare well with the original recordings.
May I employ you as my spokesman, sir. Absolutely agree here !
I actually think that this is one of the better produced Artemis releases but a better-sounding and more official release would do a better justice to this sweet score.
It doesn't seem to have done Henry and his gazillion and one Conti threads any harm.
That's right. Seriously though, I love talking about Conti, but I'll try talking about other topics too. I don't want you guys to get sick of me or Conti.
I'd buy an official release in an instant and happily consign my boot ( made for me by a kind member of this board many moons ago ) to a slowly growing coffee coaster collection.

I'm just trying to get attention from labels. It DID work two months ago, you know...
I love The Dove. I have it on vinyl, though have had no facility to listen to vinyl for some time, so probably haven't been able to listen to it for seven or eight years. I'd buy a CD in an instant.
I'm sure that Intrada would have put out MQOS with or without your requests!
Obviously the release was already in the planning. I'm referring to things like "wait a couple of weeks, we're listening", so that we know something's coming. But now that we've said it, we probably won't get any words from them. It's your fault .

And maybe then you'll expand your rather poor number of John Barry reviews .
Alex
P.S: Your Goldfinger review is lost because you didn't include it in "reviews by composer".

Oops! Thanks for letting me know.
Apologies for not replying to your email some time ago, by the way... but I thought you were a little harsh on me!
One day I will rewrite all the Barry reviews I wrote a decade ago and post them.
