Was lucky enough that I had a friend who had a second copy of this score. It's great, bold stuff from a composer known for it.

His use of the human voice in it strikes me as sounding very unlike him. It certainly works beautifully in the movie (especially in the scene where Val Kilmer sets the brush on fire to ward off the remaining Lion), but something about it strikes me as very removed from the composer's normal idiom.

Still, high quality stuff from a composer who did nothing but. Wish this disc wasn't OOP.

I can think of scores where he uses choir voices like The Omen, 13th Warrior, and First Knight. When you say "human voice" do you mean the African choirs chanting/singing?

I like The Ghost and The Darkness and play it every few months. I enjoy the main themes, and when the lions attack the hospitalized natives, the music is truly terrifying.

Yeah. The choral aspect of the score doesn't sound like any other choral work written by Goldsmith. It's always struck me as a little off; not bad by any means, just very different for him.

Perhaps Goldsmith didn't compose the vocal parts of the score. It could've been "Ghost"-written.... in the Darkness!big grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grin

According to Chapter 12 of Carrie Goldsmith's biography of her father, the African vocals on The Ghost and the Darkness were all taken from pre-existing recordings. Goldsmith had no idea what the chorus was actually saying, which prompts Carrie to remark that, for all Jerry knew, they could have been saying 'F*ck you' in Swahilibig grin. Jerry doesn't think it's funnyfrown.

This is a truely great score; I will never understand why the complete End Title was not included on the CD; it comes off as a tone poem.

In his autobiography, Miklós Rózsa says that, for the African chants in his score to SOMETHING OF VALUE (1957), which takes place in Kenya during the Mau-Mau rebellion against British colonial authorities, he just picked words at random from a Kikuyu-English dictionary (though I find that rather hard to believe, considering Rózsa's training as a musicologist, his integrity as an artist, and MGM's research department resources).

Indeed. The vocal tracks were from pre-existing tracks and electronically manipulated, hence their "not quite natural" sound.

Wow, Philipp, this is the first time I've seen you remember stuff like that! Good work!

Incidentally, I also did an even older thread on this soundtrack, but it's irretrievable.

This explains much - but I would never have expected Goldsmith to be one to use pre-recorded material in that fashion.

To link with another thread: I think Ghost & Darkness is probably my most-played score over the last couple of years. I never tire of its beauty.

This is a score that has really grown on me with time, and I played it over the Holidays. It surprised me upon release that the movie didn't live up to it's box-office expectations.

Along with an expanded or complete The River Wild, an expanded or complete The Ghost and the Darkness is my most-wanted release.

I sold off my album awaiting such a release, liked the movie a lot as well. For me the motif he uses for when the lions attacks makes for great suspense music! Also the score has similar qualities to FC given that he scored it around the same time.

P.S. Also count me in for expanded and remastered River Wild!

As far as Goldsmith expansions go, The Ghost and the Darkness is my most wanted release as well. This is one of the first Goldsmith scores I bought and to this day it's still one of my favorites. The original release misses quite some stuff. Also remember that music in the film is even more aggressive.

An expanded River Wild also wouldn't be too bad either

Hell to the yes. One of the maestros top ten best. This and US Marshalls are my most anticipated left for the gods (lala, intrada) to be expanded.

Are you talking about Fierce Creatures? Oh wait, you mean First Contact. But...DOES it have similar qualities as First Contact? In that they both use instruments that play sounds, yes.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for an expanded Ghost And The Darkness. Hopefully one of the labels (MV?) has this in the works. smile
