Man, I can't believe there's no thread dedicated to this fan favourite, but there obviously isn't, so here goes... I listened to this again yesterday, and it still stands as a great soundtrack from my favourite Williams period (the early 90's). Sure, it might be a bit overblown and "Hollywood" on occasion, but I love those Irish jigues and how they expand into a big orchestral palette. There is some really dark and harrowing passages midway (that are far more scary than the scenes they're describing), but for the most part this is either upbeat, optimistic, adventurous stuff (like the fabulous "Land Race" cue) or romantic, introspective and highly melodic. The album is almost 70 minutes long, but time flies by, it's that entertaining and varied. There is a "volume 2" floating around in bootleg land, with unreleased music, but I would NOT recommend this. There really isn't anything there that isn't already represented on the MCA album or that is musically worthwhile. Stick to the commercial disc! Oh, and the title on my disc reads "Music TAKEN from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack", surely one of the strangest I've seen. Taken? As in 'stolen'?

For some reason I never really connected emotionally to this score. It's grand enough, teeming with everything a Williams fan like myself SHOULD love, but I just always found it missing that "spark." I had the same problem with THE PATRIOT. Go figure.

Thor, I have also the CD with "MUSIC TAKEN..." on my cover. Maybe it is a European thing, and in the US, they say "Original Soundtrack" as in your picture.... This is one of my earliest memories of film music and one of my very first John Williams scores. I love it very much, especially of course THE LAND RACE, and OKLAHOMA TERRITORY. Great Williams score, for an ok Ron Howard movie. Philipp np: "far and away" (john williams)

I'm a fan, but this is not favorite! It started us down the dark path of Celtic chic... and Horner still hasn't got over it...

I liked the score at the time but haven't listened to it in many years. The "Land Race" is very memorable and definitely the stand-out piece on the album. The photography and the music were the strongest attributes of the film, so with that in mind, I'd say it's a very good and solid Williams achievement.

I agree with these comments, too, and will add "Hook" to the list. No emotional connect for me with the movie or the score. Oh yes, "Hook" was...blecch across the board. I actually remember leaving the theater in disgust. Hoffman was so BAD.
