Not entirely related, but I noticed the music for the escape from the ditched ship in the lake on the Varese disc is not the one from the film - there are marginally subtle differences. So, I've wondered what was going on there? @Grecchus, the vast majority of “Crash Landing” on the '97 Varese Sarabande release is an early take (the passage after the spacecraft sinks doesn't sync with the picture from a blown tempo change annotated at measure 122 in the original sketches). The unabridged cue of “Crash Landing” was divided into two cues during recording, the first part being the vast majority of the cue (from the start to Taylor saying “All right, we've had enough sleep to hold us for a while, time to start earning all that back pay...”). Goldsmith did a clean restart where the astronauts come ashore since there's separately recorded pass of the entire string section doing pizzicato fed through the Echoplex. I detailed all this and more in my 2015 book, Simians & Serialism: A History and Analysis of Jerry Goldsmith's Score to Planet of the Apes (Though it's currently out of print, a New Edition of the book including additional info and analysis of Goldsmith's Escape score as well as Rosenman's Beneath is due out in the first half of 2019). The re-recording I released in 2016 on CD contains the complete “Crash Landing” in precise tempo to match Goldsmith's timing to picture. The CD is still available through www.PithikosEntertainment.com, for $14.95 + s/h, though I only have a handful of copies left.

I have a 90's SOUNDTRACK magazine and in the news dept. we can read: Coming from Varese, PLANET OF THE APES including an alternate Main title ! Anyone knows what happened ? @Sentenza, although it's puzzling, I would assume that Varese may have had an early take of the “Main Title” with the piccolo playing the serial “melody” (before Schaffner expressed his dislike for the piccolo). Mr. Goldsmith may have objected to its inclusion, or someone promoting the album confused the Escape “Suite” as an alternate (as others here have hypothesized). The re-recording I released in 2016 on CD, includes 3 tracks performed with their original orchestrations, including the “Main Title” with the piccolo playing the serial “melody” as Goldsmith originally composed it (also “The Searchers” and “The Revelation” in their original orchestrations). As I said in the other response, the CD is still available through www.PithikosEntertainment.com, for $14.95 + s/h, though I only have a handful of copies left.

The samples sound great.

The Simians and Serialism book and corresponding CD are both essential for anybody really interested in this score.

John, I was not aware of your book or CD rerecording, but listened to the samples and quickly ordered one of your few remaining copies (along with your other book, Location! Location! Location!). I'm an Apes junkie and a big Jerry Goldsmith fan, so I'll be looking for the new edition of Simians & Serialism when you release it. Please let us know when it's out. Thanks, @Scotty Boy! Your order's on the way and I've added you to my Simians & Serialism new edition alert e-mail list, which is growing every day! (Plus, I'm sure I'll make some noise about it here on the FSM board too.). I hope you enjoy the CD and Book, lots of makings of Apes adventures and tons of info awaits!

I don't know if it's because of this thread (three cheers for the FSM board!) but I've had a run on the remaining Apes re-recording CDs and now I've got less than 25 copies of the new Apes location book, Location! Location! Location!—which is also on sale. Get 'em while I got 'em! BTW, the Purgatory Original Soundtrack Digital Download (Hi-Res audio with PDF liner notes) has been reduced to $5.99! The LP/CD/Download set is $14.99. All at www.PithikosEntertainment.com
