Saimel Ediciones add to their catalogue a new title composed by Nino Rota never previously released: THE RELUCTANT SAINT. Available Now.

With an international cast of actors lead by Maximilian Schell –fresh from the Academy Award he had received for his role in Stanley Kramer’s wartime drama Judgment at Nuremberg– and with supporting actors like Ricardo Montalban, Akim Tamiroff and Lea Padovani, The Reluctant Saint was released in 1962. Produced and directed by Edward Dmytryk, is the story of the 17th century Franciscan friar Giuseppe da Copertino, who is honored as a Christian mystic and saint by the Catholic church and who was known for his ecstatic visions and miraculous levitations.
Although most Rota scores from the 60s have in the meantime become available either on LP or
on CD, the truly delightful music he composed for The Reluctant Saint till now has always been neglected so that we are especially proud to present the complete film score (Track 1 – 18) including even some bonus and alternate tracks (Track 19 – 31) for the very first time on this CD, with lines notes of Stefan Schlegel.

I am really surprised that there is so little response to the announcement of this lovely score which fills an important gap in the Rota discography and is now officially released for the first time ever.
Are there no Rota enthusiasts on this board anymore?

Indeed, since this is in some sense a US Golden Age release, I expected more reactions.

By the way, do you know why none of the CAM Nino Rota CDs have been expanded yet? No extra music? I would assume that titles like 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita would be big sellers, although I am happy with the CAM editions and I am not really complaining.

I don't know why. But there is still the possibility that expanded albums might appear in future from the Italian lables.

At first I thought the title referred to Nino Rota himself, who (according to Miklos Rozsa) was an exceptionally generous human being and supported his music students at Bari with help from his own movie income.

I'm pretty much agreeing to the statement of Roszaphile above me. I thought (with the wording of the thread), that it was about Nino (himself). Please, change the wording a bit to reflect : 'New Nino Rota soundtrack never before available'! Or something like that. I love Nino Rota's scores and these sound samples sound very nice indeed. I want this title myself; and I've never heard of the film in any fashion.

You can view the complete film on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1mT7IvgfiY

And it is also available on DVD.

Director Edward Dmytryk, who here was also the producer and shot the film in Italy directly afte he had made WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, in an interview called it one of his favorite films, but also "my biggest flop".
So I suppose that also in the US not too many people might have seen the movie when it came out in 1962. Or am I wrong?

Thanks for your comments.
It was our mistake.
I changed the wording.

I'm fascinated with this issue. It is one of the best soundtracks of Nino Rota. The music is sweet and delicate and save a sublime emotion. It's wonderful work he has done Saimel recovery as it was totally forgotten. It is an essential issue and hope to enjoy it soon because it is difficult to find in the market treasures like this.

I ordered this a few days ago as soon as I learned of its release.

(I assume that the first sentence in the first post above, (beginning "Despite...") was supposed to say something about the movie's box office disappointment but somehow the writer forgot his thought somewhere along the way...)

Never heard of this title before but I will be surely including this one in my next order. It rarely happens to see a previously unreleased Nino Rota score coming out.

I still hope that someone will eventually (find? and) release his "Caro Michele".

It is unknown incomprehensibly Nino Rota soundtrack but one of the best and most complete because it contains a popular tune with music of religious nature, choral hymns and very melodic themes that give a spiritual air. In the film greatly enjoys music so I guess that the disk must be something amazing. I was pleasantly surprised by the addition disc time on the market since there are hardly any issues with bonus tracks. In a way reminiscent of the many issues that years later he wrote to Riz Ortolani Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna.
To me, a lover of classical and religious films I think one of the most interesting issues that have emerged from a long time and I look forward to enjoying the drive.
I hope it's an issue that can reach all lovers of Rota's music and classic Hollywood cinema because from what I see is a limited edition.

Edward Dmytryk had directed Maximilian Schell in THE YOUNG LIONS and reteamed with him in this 1962 biography. Schell played real-life priest Giuseppe Desa, who eventually became a saint. It's great to have the Nino Rota score available.

Sometimes it's difficult to find the owners of the rights of soundtracks.
We are working to publish this kind of soundtracks.
Of course, if we find the owners of "Caro Michele" we will publish it.
I'm sure that you like "The Reluctant Saint", this soundtrack is pure Nino Rota. And we have recovered all the music used in the film.
