The winner of the International Film Music Critics Award for ‘Best Original Score for an Action/Adventure/Thriller Film’, one of five scores nominated for the ‘Film Score of the Year’ IFMCA award and a frequent top score on many reviewers ‘Best of Film Music 2013' lists, Spanish composer Víctor Reyes’ highly virtuosic original music for the Hitchcock-inspired Elijah Wood thriller Grand Piano is being released by MovieScore Media and Kronos Records digitally on March 11 (coinciding with the US theatrical releases of the film) and will be available on CD in April.
Paying tribute to film music classics such as Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto and Miklós Rózsa’s Spellbound Concerto, and with a nod to Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, the score is essentially a Piano Concerto featuring a lot of drama, rhapsodic writing and beautiful orchestrations. In addition, the strikingly original Main Title music and the “unplayable” piano extravaganza, ‘La Cinquette’ (co-composed by Eugenio Mira), bookends the album in a very exhilarating way. I was surprised to see that this movie was getting good reviews (well, the one I read), what with John Cusack sadly in the "Direct To Video" phase of his career. Interested to hear the score, as well.
But if this is a 2014 theatrical release, how was it eligible to win an IFYMCA award? Can we trust ANY international committee of film music critics anymore?

According to Jon Broxton when I asked him about this over on Filmtracks (http://www.filmtracks.com/scoreboard/index.cgi?read=137942):
We track a dozen or so box office markets - USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands/Belgium, Poland, Scandinavia, Australia, Japan - and whenever a new film opens, wherever the film opens first, it gets picked up for our list of eligible films.
Screenings at film festivals don't count - we use the commercial theatrical release date - but a composer can ask for special dispensation for a score which is completed but the film doesn't have a distribution deal, like what happened with SIDDHARTH, or for score to a film which has opened in a market we don't track (like, say, Greece or Russia). We usually have 15-20 of these "special dispensations" each year.
Then we add in games, TV movies, TV series, and the most significant straight-to-DVD releases, to come up with our final list of 2,000 or so titles. These are then broken down into the appropriate genres, and from there the members vote.
It's quite simple really.

It was released in theaters in Spain in 2013. We use the release date of whatever country it opens in first, which is not always the US.
Yeah, someone up there covered it based on an old response of yours.

This was more along the lines of a day-and-date kind of VOD release, which a lot of good movies use to springboard into theatrical. It was available on VOD from January through March 6, then released in theaters March 7.
I saw it last weekend and it's a very solid thriller indeed, with Reyes' music playing a huge role in the proceedings. Wood is fantastic as the lead. He's in nearly every scene and has to play both to the audience in the film (it takes place almost entirely at a concert) and the viewing audience who knows what's happening. Some are saying it's the best movie DePalma never made, and those comparisons are easy on a technical level - the fluidity of the camera, the confined space, the long shots, the split optics effects, etc - but not really fair otherwise. DePalma nearly always uses his tricks in service of some kind of commentary or deeper meaning even in his most lurid work. This movie doesn't have such aspirations. It's an entertaining, very well-made technical exercise. It also gets in and out in under 90 minutes, which is a HUGE plus in my book.

I'm sure it's nowhere near as good as The Amazing Spiderman 2 will be, but this is really outstanding and everyone should buy it.

Terrible movie, but good score - so can someone tell me why the CD is virtually not available anywhere? Not on Amazon anywhere, and it seems to be out of stock everywhere else.

Yes. It is odd that it is so scarce, if it exists at all. I checked the Moviescore Media website (http://moviescoremedia.com/grand-piano-victor-reyes/) repeatedly over the past couple of months since the CD 'release date' of April 29, and never saw a link. It was briefly available from a third party seller from Amazon:

I was able to order it, and it has supposedly been shipped. We'll see...
If you click on your link you'll see "item under review" - I, too, ordered from that seller and was sent a completely different CD by some person named Gus Reyes - so I don't think that seller has the correct CD.
Perhaps MSM would like to actually address this?

I watched the movie recently and thought it was reasonably fun (if you ignored how silly the set-up was).
But the music really is the star of the show. I listened to the whole score again just now on Spotify and will definitely be picking it up on CD once it sees the light of day. Brisk, moving, engaging, thrilling. It puts me in the mood of wanting to see a live concert performance.

Yeah, I just asked Godwin (Kronos) and he said that it has not been released on CD yet but will be coming out in late August.
Late August now!! This seems about the 3rd delay. I've got a bad feeling about this.
I just don't really understand it - they obviously got the digital rights, so how hard is it to manufacture a CD, unless they figured no one would buy such a short CD in this era.
