Frustration. I did a search for BAFTA and nothing came up with a 2014 date, so I started a new thread, and, not really giving it much thought, posted it on the non-film score discussion side. Then I saw this and went back and deleted it. Sorry. (And this still doesn't show when I "Search Terms" for BAFTA.)

And the list looks exactly as we expected: Captain Phillips - Henry Jackman The Book Thief - John Williams 12 Years A Slave - Hans Zimmer Gravity - Steven Price Saving Mr. Banks - Thomas Newman It´s always the same: it´s the movie that gets nominated - or the big name composer. Regardless of the score´s actual worth.

Re: "It's always the same: it´s the movie that gets nominated - or the big name composer. Regardless of the score´s actual worth." Which is a shame, because we all know how many wonderful scores (and composers!) have NEVER been nominated for ANYTHING. If I had the time i'd start a discussion of the best scores and composers never nominated for awards!

I think it's safe to predict that Williams, Price, Zimmer and Newman are almost guaranteed Oscar noms come next week, the only "horse race" being the fifth position as there are several true contenders: Captain Phillips, Rush, Philomena, Her (Arcade Fire + Owen Pallett = Dynamic fusion), The Hobbit 2, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Monsters University (sorry if I left out an obvious one), so that's seven titles right there. Have read that "Frozen" is out of the running (fate that befell my favorite score of the year, Price's "The World's End"), but not sure why this would be the case as both the Lopez' and Chris Beck's contribution to the score whole is discrete and substantial. Would be good if this category could stretch to six nominees, but don't think there is precedent for this (unlike the Emmys, which, one year, had seven or eight nominees in the Outstanding Music Composition for a Mini Series/Special category.)

Disappointing that Alex Heffes' score for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom wasn't nominated.

And once again, movies that haven't opened in the UK get nominated (in this case The Book Thief and 12 Years A Slave). Then again, this is the awards ceremony whose definition of a British film is one that has any kind of UK link at all (Gravity?). To my knowledge, 'Gravity' was made totally in the UK, CGI 'n all.

Captain Phillips is proof yet again that people vote for the movie they liked, assuming the music was great. The big finale of the film is all tracked with a reused cue from the finale of "United 93", the main theme in Jackman's score is Powell's main theme from United 93, and the rest of the score couldn't more obviously reflect United 93 as temp music. Shame. At least the Oscar nominations are only picked by the music division. I have to assume the BAFTA music nominations were chosen by the whole membership.

That's why choices like The Social Network, The Hurt Locker, Brokeback Mountain or Michael Clayton are even more frustrating - when you know they come from the professionals... Haha, while I thought The Social Network's score was very effective and innovative, otherwise it's a fair point

To my knowledge, 'Gravity' was made totally in the UK, CGI 'n all. Actors were filmed in US Gravity was shot almost entirely at Shepperton and Pinewood Studios, outside London. There was only a tiny bit of location work done in the US - in Arizona, for the final scene. http://www.pinewoodgroup.com/production/gravity
