I SPY and THE PRODIGAL

News flash by Lukas Kendall

Film Score Monthly's new limited edition CDs feature a high point of '60s television scoring and a biblical epic by a Golden Age great!

Silver Age Classics: I SPY

I Spy (1965-1968) was a groundbreaking action-adventure TV series starring Robert Culp and Bill Cosby: the first pairing of a white and black actor in lead roles and the first TV series to be shot on worldwide locations. The jazzy, energetic and totally hip music by Earle Hagen, regular composer and longtime friend of series producer Sheldon Leonard, fused jazz with dramatic underscore and world music styles. Together with Hugo Friedhofer, Hagen provided an original score for each one of I Spy's 82 episodes.

This premiere CD of original TV soundtracks from I Spy (the LPs were re-recordings) features five episode scores: "So Long, Patrick Henry" (the broadcast premiere; Hong Kong), "The Time of the Knife" (Japan), "Turkish Delight," (Mexico), "The Warlord" (with Robert Culp in a dual role; Burma) and "Mainly on the Plains" (guest starring Boris Karloff; Spain). The first three episodes and the series' main and end titles music are presented in incredible stereo sound, a rarity for TV music of the era; the latter two episodes are in clean mono.

The CD comes with a 24-page booklet with copious liner notes, photographs, and a foreword by Robert Culp, who in addition to starring wrote the teleplays for "So Long, Patrick Henry" and "The Warlord."  I Spy is an essential TV soundtrack and unforgettable example of suave '60s spy scoring. Don't miss it, Jack!

Golden Age Classics: THE PRODIGAL

The Prodigal (1955) is a gargantuan M-G-M epic starring Lana Turner as a pagan priestess who tempts the "prodigal son" of the biblical parable (Edmund Purdom) into her lustful following. The music by Bronislau Kaper (1902-1983) is a mammoth symphonic score including male chorus for the Hebrew protagonist and alluring female chorus for the pagan temptress. As befitting the flesh and carnage of the spectacular genre B.C., the score features thunderous marches, romping action, Middle Eastern-flavored source cues, and moody, reverent searching of the soul.

FSM's CD is the premiere release of the complete score in chronological order and stereo sound, including deleted and alternate cues. Kaper was a splendid Golden Age composer (Them!, Lili, Mutiny on the Bounty) seldom represented on CD, with a particular gift for melody. The battle between the Hebrew God and the Astarte idol beckons you!
