Raise the Titanic News
by Lukas Kendall
Here's an FSD that will be short but of great interest to readers: Silva
Screen has recorded in Prague John Barry's complete Raise the Titanic
score, to be released in late summer/early fall. They earlier did a nine-minute
(or thereabouts) suite; this time they've done the whole thing, approximately
50 minutes.
I rarely tell people about the projects we are working on here at FSM,
because there are literally dozens of things in various stages of development.
But I will say almost definitively that there will not be a release of
the Raise the Titanic original soundtrack. We spent a great deal
of time looking into it, and the tapes are lost. Apparently ITC (which
produced the movie) retained a music and effects track but no music masters.
To complicate the matter, right now the ITC catalog is being portioned
up among who knows how many companies, which makes licensing any of their
soundtracks virtually impossible. And hey, we tried!
In this light, Silva Screen have chosen a perfect candidate for re-recording,
and hopefully they've spent the time and money to get a good performance.
It's a fallacy to think that just because most of John Barry's music is
not very busy or intricate that it's not hard to record properly. There
are so many matters of mixing, balance, performance, dynamics, etc. that
make a Barry score sound so great. Not to name names, but there have been
some stinky John Barry re-recordings. Again, I hope Silva Screen got it
right.
In other news, my apologies to everybody who encountered
bizarre error messages when trying to use our secure server order forms
this weekend. We have been doing some updates to the site that inadvertantly
disabled these forms. They should all work now. It makes me bash my head
against the wall (metaphorically) to think of lost subscriptions and CD
orders because people got some error message and thought "screw this."
Please, give it another shot, and email me if you have any questions or
problems. Thanks!
